Taurinya offers architectural history, traces of former work in the mountains, and hikes with varying levels of difficulty. If you are looking for a hotel in Taurinya, you can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in churches and chapels, the Salver mining site, or a longer mountain hike. When planning, it is worth considering these themes separately: the historic sites tell the story of different uses, while the trails vary considerably in length and elevation profile.

Churches, a Chapel and Ceramic Art

Taurinya’s parish church is dedicated to Saint Fructuosus. It is documented as a possession of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa Abbey between 845 and 855, a possession confirmed by King Lothair. The present nave and bell tower were built during renovations in the 12th century. The church’s early history of ownership and its later architectural features therefore belong to two distinct periods.

The Saint-Valentin Chapel in Corts also has its own architectural history: it is preserved, probably dates from the 12th century, and has a single-nave layout with a semicircular apse. It was built on the foundations of a signal tower erected in the 11th century. Taurinya is also home to the house of the well-known ceramic artist François Miro.

Mining History on the Sentier des Mines

The Sentier des Mines is a 3.7 km municipal hiking trail marked in yellow. It offers panoramic views over the Taurinya valley and the Litera gorges. Following an old ore-transport route, it reaches the Salver mining site. There, a 100 m sloping section leads to the furnaces and former miners’ accommodation. Information panels about the mining site are placed along much of the trail.

Llasseres: Traces of Pastoralism

Another historical focus is Llasseres, a former pastoral site in the municipality of Taurinya at an elevation of 1,200 to 1,500 m. The Les Costes and Ramá trails lead there from Taurinya. Several types of dry-stone pastoral structures remain, including livestock enclosures and shepherds’ huts. While Salver brings the mining history to life, Llasseres highlights former pasture use and its associated structures. Access to this mountainous site is challenging.

Compare Hikes by Distance and Elevation Gain

Les Balcons de Taurinya starts in Taurinya and is a challenging 12 km circular hike marked with GR and PR trail signs. The Sentier de Llasera et du Roc Mosquit, by contrast, is a climb with an elevation gain of 1,520 m that also starts in Taurinya. The comparison highlights different planning details: for Les Balcons, the circular route and distance are given, while the Llasera route is described by its elevation gain. The footpath from Taurinya to the Refuge des Cortalets passes through Llasseres, Roc Mosquit, Soucarrade and Ras des Cortalets. Before setting out, check trail conditions, signage and any potential access obstacles locally.
