Sournia lies in the mid-mountains at an altitude of 540 m and is crossed by the La Désix river. For a stay focused on culture and architectural history, there are different periods to explore: the ruins of the former Saint-Michel church, the Ancienne église Sainte-Félicité, the parish church with furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Château de Sournia, dating from 1537. The wooded surroundings of the Chapelle Saint-Michel, paths leading to this chapel and seasonal activities also add to the range of themes. You can tailor your visit to history, landscape or local life.

Location and course of the river

The La Désix flows through Sournia and is 32.3 km long. It rises near the Col d’Aussières and flows into the Agly near Ansignan. Together with the elevation and mid-mountain location, this provides a geographical context for your stay. The river information places Sournia in a wider setting; its architectural history, by contrast, can be explored through individual named churches, chapels and the Château.

Churches and different dates

The Saint-Michel and Sainte-Félicité sites bring together early construction dates and a later shared heritage designation. The ruins of the former Saint-Michel church were classified as a historic monument by decree of 2 August 1965. Its main nave is believed to date from before 950 and is attributed to Visigothic architecture in the Mediterranean Pyrenees. The Ancienne église Sainte-Félicité was classified by the same decree; it is believed to have been built shortly after 950. These cautiously worded dates are close together, while the shared 1965 decree concerns their heritage status.

The Eglise paroissiale de la nativité de Notre Dame offers a different perspective on sacred architecture through its furnishings: the choir is decorated with 17th-century stucco work, and the altarpieces date from the 18th century. These details distinguish the centuries of the choir decoration and the altarpieces. The Grotte du Menié adds a specific 19th-century event to the history of the area: in 1874, Monsieur Mir, the parish priest of Sournia, converted the cave into a chapel.

Chapels and the Château

The single-nave Chapelle Saint Laurent d’Arsa lies 500 m north of the ruins of the Château d’Arsa. The chapel houses a 13th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. The Château de Sournia dates from 1537. The different names refer to separate historical points of reference: the distance given concerns Saint Laurent d’Arsa and the ruins of the Château d’Arsa, while the year 1537 dates the Château de Sournia.
