Discover Claira on a walk through its history, past buildings from different periods and along a route to mills and a chapel. The heritage trail connects historic sites via 22 information panels. The “Mills and Chapel” hike adds a longer route through vineyards and orchards to the village walk. Which of these perspectives interests you most can be a helpful guide when planning your stay.

History along trails and at historic buildings

The municipal heritage trail tells the story of Claira through 22 information panels. Located at historic sites, the panels make the walk itself a connecting thread: rather than focusing on a single building, you encounter several landmarks of the local heritage along the way.

The Church of Saint-Vincent reveals another layer of history. It has Romanesque origins and was altered in the 14th century by the addition of side chapels. Two bells in the bell tower date from 1328. Inside, there is an altarpiece on the main altar and an organ from the early 20th century. If you would like to visit the interior, check visiting arrangements in advance.

Saint Pierre del Vilar is also a Romanesque building, remodelled in the 19th century. Saint Pierre de Vilario is described as an old hermitage, originally built on the remains of a village that has since disappeared. These two historical connections offer different perspectives on Claira’s past.

Mills and local heritage

The Moulin de la Torre is a windmill built in a typically Catalan style from stone and cayroux. In 2012, the Les Moulins de Claira association saved and restored the mill using traditional methods. Interior visits are not offered every day, but on days organised by volunteers. Check in advance when a visit is possible.

The site of Claira’s watermill is used as a recreational area, with a windmill nearby. The historic watermill dates from the 15th century and is associated with an irrigation canal on the banks of the Agly. Bread made from local organic flour from the Moulin de la Torre is sold during events.

Saint Pierre de Vilario is a recreational area owned by the town of Claira and available to rent for weekends and evenings. If you are planning a stay there, check availability before your trip. This lets you consider the historic sites and the recreational area as two distinct aspects of what the area offers.

The “Mills and Chapel” route

The hike leads to the Moulin de la Torre, Claira’s historic watermill and the Chapel of Saint Pierre. It is rated easy; the stated duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes, with 15 metres of elevation gain and a distance of 8.7 kilometres. Check the waymarking and trail conditions before setting off.

Along the way, the route follows a cycle path through vineyards to the greenway. It then runs between orchards and the Agly. Herons may be spotted along this section. The route thus connects specific local heritage sites with a trail through varied landscapes. The stated duration can help you plan; as described, spotting herons is a possibility, not a guarantee.

Claira as a base for your stay

Claira is accessible via the A9 motorway and the RD 83. When choosing a hotel, consider which of the village’s features you would like to shape your stay: the walk with its historic stops, the architecture of Saint-Vincent and the other buildings, or the longer hike to the mills and chapel. The route, visiting arrangements and bread available during events each have their own conditions; take these into account when planning.
