Argeles-Sur-Mer brings together cultural and historical themes with coastal and natural environments. For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between these highlights: exhibitions and buildings on one hand, and educational trails, landscapes and outdoor activities on the other. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which theme you want to shape your stay.

Culture and architectural history

The Mémorial du camp d’Argelès-sur-Mer is a municipal museum and memorial site, integrated into the municipal culture and heritage department. Its permanent exhibition uses interactive displays, films, audiovisual eyewitness accounts and archival documents. It is complemented by a dedicated space for temporary exhibitions held throughout the year. This brings together different approaches to commemorating the past: exhibition design, moving images, eyewitness accounts and archival material.

The Casa de l'Albera offers a different cultural focus. This municipal cultural space is located in the heart of Argeles-Sur-Mer and includes a permanent exhibition as well as temporary exhibitions. The fully renovated traditional house presents the history, culture, heritage and traditional know-how of Argelès and the Albères massif. Its four exhibitions, including a temporary exhibition, cover the geology of the Albères, Catalan history and customs, and agricultural occupations. The subject matter therefore ranges from knowledge of the landscape to regional cultural history and work.

The Église Notre-Dame-dels-Prats offers another distinct focus: it was built in the 10th century and houses 103 works of art. Its bell tower dates from the 14th century and is 34 metres high. The different dates help distinguish the church and tower as two historical points of reference.

Coastal landscapes and natural environments

Argeles-Sur-Mer’s natural character encompasses sandy and rocky coastlines, the rugged ridges of the Albères massif, agricultural and natural landscapes of the Roussillon plain, as well as parks and protected natural areas. Argeles-Sur-Mer is connected to the Natura 2000 site “Embouchure du Tech et grau de la Massane” (FR9101493). It comprises a mainland and a marine section; the marine section lies within the Parc naturel marin du golfe du Lion. Protected and rare Mediterranean coastal species find a habitat in the dune at Plage de la Marenda, north of Argeles-Sur-Mer.

The discovery trail in the Mas Larrieu nature reserve is open to the public free of charge all year round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This means you can plan your visit independently of any particular time of day.

Educational trails and outdoor activities

Parc de Valmy combines nature and culture with a range of outdoor activities. Its botanical and cultural educational trail features around 15 themed panels about the history, culture, heritage, fauna and flora of Argeles-Sur-Mer and the Albères. The park is also the starting point for several hikes, as well as mountain biking and Nordic walking routes. Alongside the activity routes, the educational trail also focuses on local cultural and natural themes.

Parc de Valmy is open to the public free of charge and offers shaded woodland areas, a family picnic area and a children’s playground. Since opening conditions can change, check them before your visit.

At Plage du Racou, you can explore coves with a mask and snorkel, spearfish and go paddleboarding. If you are interested in water activities, this focus is clearly different from the educational and hiking routes at Parc de Valmy.
