Saint-Pons-La-Calm: Village History and a Circular Walk
Accommodation in Saint-Pons-La-Calm
Saint-Pons-La-Calm is a hilltop village overlooking the Tave Valley. Local points of interest range from the geological features at Le Planas to the architectural history of the old village. For active planning, there is the challenging Le chemin de Masmolène circular hike and a Friday market held during a limited period. Depending on your interests, you can focus on local history, the landscape, hiking or a visit to the market.
Hillside Setting and Geological Substrate
Rue du Levant offers visitors a unique panorama. There is a precisely named geological point of reference at Le Planas: the site lies at an altitude of 135 metres, directly on a limestone bed from the Cretaceous period with Urgonian facies. This bed forms the foundation of the village.
Architectural History of the Old Village
Château du Fort-villageois stands in the heart of the old village and was extended by an additional storey in the 15th century. It is also called the Presbytère and is the only visible remnant of the former fortified enclosure, known as the barry, which once surrounded the old village. Today's Church of Saint-Pons was built in 1866 on the ground plan of a 12th-century church; its interior was restored from 1987 to 1992. The architectural history of the old village spans the former fortifications and the 12th-century predecessor church, as well as later construction and restoration phases at the château and today's church. If you plan to visit the château, check the access conditions in advance.
Water and Silk Production
Waterworks and former trades are also part of the area's history. Grande Fontaine was rebuilt in 1784. The village lavoir has three basins fed by overflow from the livestock watering troughs, making the water supply part of the area's heritage. Another story is told by the former silk mill in Rue de la Magnanerie. It operated from 1840 to 1884 and employed around thirty silk spinners.
Le chemin de Masmolène: A Challenging Circular Hike
If you're planning a hike, you can assess Le chemin de Masmolène using its clearly specified route details: the circular hike is 20.2 kilometres long, rated difficult and includes 432 metres of positive elevation gain. The route passes through five municipalities, with Saint-Pons-La-Calm being the fourth. Audio accompaniment for Le chemin de Masmolène is available via the Latitude Gard smartphone app. The tour therefore offers both a tangible physical challenge and audio guidance. Check route conditions before setting out.
Friday Market Beneath the Old Market Halls
The Saint-Pons-La-Calm market is scheduled to take place beneath the old market halls on Fridays from 5 pm to 8 pm, from 23 October 2025 to 31 December 2027. Visitors can meet local producers there. The regular weekday and time slot make it easier to plan; check the specific market date before travelling. This makes it easy to include a market visit as a separate activity alongside the historical sights or hike.
