Discover Pujaut: History, Nature and Wine
Accommodation in Pujaut
Pujaut brings together historic buildings, the history of its airfield, a marked cycling route, and wine and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, it helps to keep these highlights distinct: the Chapelle Saint-Vérédème and Moulin Chiron tell the story of the town’s long history, while the cycling route comes with specific time and distance details. Events and the market have their own dates, which you should check before departure. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Pujaut, you can use these interests to decide which activities will shape your visit.
Romanesque Chapel and the History of the Mill
The Chapelle Saint-Vérédème is Pujaut’s oldest building. It dates from the 10th century and was built in the Romanesque style. It is named after Vérédème, a 7th-century hermit who later became Bishop of Avignon. The chapel hosts exhibitions and visits; the exhibition programme may change. So if you’re planning a visit, check the current programme.
Moulin Chiron also offers a glimpse into the town’s history. Jacques Bouissonnas built the mill in 1175. Much later, from 1775 until the end of the 19th century, flour was produced there. This timeline makes the mill a historical point of interest distinct from the chapel: it connects medieval building history with a later period of flour production.
Views and Cycling Route
Moulin Chiron is located on the Plateau de la Vierge above Pujaut. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the village and surrounding area. There are also opportunities for walks, sports activities and picnics at the site. This combines the mill’s historical significance with time outdoors, without requiring you to commit to any particular activity.
For a specific trip plan, the marked “Patrimoine et Aviation” cycling route provides clear reference points: it starts in Pujaut, is 11.31 kilometres long and has 87 metres of elevation gain. It takes about an hour. The route passes the airfield grounds; from the Belvédère de la Vierge, there are views of the former ponds. This lets you estimate the time and distance in advance without assuming an unspecified walking or cycling time for other routes.
The Planas wetland is also a distinctive natural area: at least 65 species of conservation concern, regionally declining or rare, have been identified there. These include insects and flowering plants as well as birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. This list illustrates the diversity of the species groups recorded; it does not guarantee that you will see any particular animals during a visit.
Airfield, Events and Wine
Pujaut Airfield opened to the public in 1947. Gliding with winch launches was initially practised there; parachuting, model aircraft and astronomy were added later. Today, the airfield is used for leisure and tourism activities, although specific providers and activities may change. Skydive Pujaut offers a PAC training course, which begins with six supervised jumps and leads to making parachute jumps independently. As the course structure may change, check the current offer before planning your visit.
Festi Jeunes has been held in Pujaut since 2013. The family theatre festival features musical fairy tales and comedy theatre; some performances are intended for children from six months old. The programme changes with each edition, so check the relevant dates and performances before your trip. The Printemps des Poètes in Pujaut included a street exhibition featuring photographs and poems. The municipality took part in the national event in March 2022; an edition of the festival also took place in 2025. Check future dates in advance.
Pujaut’s wine production includes AOC and IGP wines under the Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages and IGP Gard designations. Le Cellier des Chartreux is a cooperative winery with a tasting room in Pujaut. Reservations are available by email, telephone and online; booking methods may change. The market follows its own schedule: it is held on Thursday mornings in the market square. As market times may change, check the date before your visit.
