Poulx combines a karst landscape with historical traces of its water and agricultural history. These themes can be considered separately when choosing a destination: the plateau shapes the natural environment, while the church, water installation and capitelles are tangible evidence of the town’s history. There is also a themed walk, as well as mountain biking and trail running. This can help you decide whether Poulx appeals to you primarily for its geology, cultural history or outdoor activities.

Karst Landscape and Natural Environment

A large part of Poulx’s natural environment lies within the Gorges du Gardon area. The plateau is characterised by a karst landscape: water mostly drains underground, and several avens are among its geological features. These include Aven de Mandre and Aven du Pin; both are affected by pollution. The landscape therefore ranges from the natural environment within the Gorges du Gardon to the avens of the plateau.

Cultural Heritage and Local History

The Église Saint-Michel in Poulx is listed as a historic monument and was badly damaged during the Wars of Religion. Puits Vieux is the only historic water installation in Poulx that has survived; the others have disappeared. Along the Chemin Blanc, a somewhat hidden but well-preserved dry-stone capitelle can be seen in an olive grove. A second capitelle was reconstructed opposite the Salle des Fêtes car park to recall Poulx’s agrarian and pastoral past.

The church provides a religious historical landmark, while Puits Vieux and the capitelles add a dimension of water and agricultural history. The capitelles illustrate both preservation and reconstruction: one survives in the olive grove, while the other was reconstructed opposite the Salle des Fêtes car park as a reminder of the past.

Water in Everyday Life Through Time

Poulx offers an informative and fun walk exploring the importance of water in residents’ everyday lives over time. It offers a different perspective from Puits Vieux: the installation is a surviving historic structure, while the walk looks at the historical role of water in everyday life. If you are interested in local history, these experiences complement each other: one is a tangible landmark, while the other explores the importance of water in daily life.

Mountain Biking and Trail Running

The VTT La Source de la Bastide route is marked in yellow and has signposts. Check the signs during your ride, as they may change over time. The Poulx stadium car park is designated for this route. Trail-running activities in the garrigue are offered by the Poulx-based running club Courir en Garrigue. These offer a choice of different sporting activities: a marked mountain bike route with a designated car park, or trail running in the garrigue.
