Mandagout brings together hiking trails and themes of nature, agriculture and history. The village lies within the accession area of the Cévennes National Park. Mandagout has chestnut and holm oak forests, as well as several ZNIEFF areas of special natural interest. Exploring the area along its trails reveals not only these landscapes but also the cultivation of sweet onions and traces of earlier land use.

Hiking trails linked to agriculture

The Balade Site Remarquable du Goût de l’Oignon Doux starts and ends in Mandagout. This interpretive trail focuses on sweet onion farming in Mandagout. Its central theme is specific: the route connects the trail itself with local onion cultivation.

The Sentier de l’Arboux descends to the hamlet of l’Arboux and then climbs back up to the sweet onion fields. Faïsses are also part of the trail’s story: this is the name for terraces where mulberry trees were grown during the heyday of silk production. Here, onion farming meets the legacy of an earlier agricultural use. The terraces give the route a historical connection as well as defining its course.

Another route linked to onion farming is Espace Ceven’Trail N°9. This challenging figure-eight circuit runs through the pleasant Mandagout valley. Along the trail, visitors can discover the cultivation of Cévennes sweet onions on terraces. Its figure-eight shape and the theme of terrace farming define this circuit.

Trail distances, durations and forest landscapes

Espace Ceven’Trail N°23 is 2.2 kilometres long and includes 500 metres of elevation gain. The stated duration is 1 hour and 10 minutes. A different time commitment is required for the day hike that combines the Sentier des Cascades d’Orgon and the Sentier de l’Écureuil: this combination is listed as taking five hours. The two time estimates help distinguish a single trail with a specified distance from a longer combined hike.

The Sentier des Cascades d’Orgon starts at Cap de Côte in Mandagout and passes through the Aigoual Forest. The route includes conifer forest, small stone bridges and retaining walls built during the reforestation of the late 19th century. The trail can thus be described not only by its starting point, but also by the combination of forest and historic structures. Those planning a longer outing can combine this trail with the Sentier de l’Écureuil to make a five-hour day hike.

Temples and local history

The history of the buildings also offers several points of reference. The current temple in Mandagout dates from 1892 and bears a republican motto. In the hamlet of Beaulieu, the former temple dates from 1648 and is now a painting studio. The two buildings therefore represent different periods of construction and present-day uses.

Another historical landmark is the original church of Saint-Grégoire. It stood beside the castle and was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. This story adds to the information about the temples by providing a link to earlier buildings and the conflicts that shaped the region.

For planning purposes, the attractions can be distinguished by their focus: some trails lead to sweet onions and terraces; the Sentier des Cascades d’Orgon combines forest scenery with small stone bridges and retaining walls; and the history of the buildings spans from a former temple dating from 1648 to the current temple of 1892.
