Les Angles combines local history with several distinct themes to help you plan your trip. In the narrow streets, paths lead to places that inspired 20th-century painters; elsewhere, monuments and their information panels take centre stage. The presbytery and the remains of medieval fortifications offer specific points of reference for the village’s history. At Parc du Cosmos, you can also visit the planetarium and take guided tours, while the ViaRhôna offers a different perspective for cyclists. This means you can choose Les Angles according to whether art, architectural history, astronomy or a bike ride is the deciding factor for your stay.

Fortifications and Village History

The presbytery, called presbytère in French, is located in a former medieval fortification; the church stands within the same military complex. Since 31 October 1912, the presbytery has been partially protected as a Monument historique. A north-west tower and sections of wall to the north, west and south survive from the 12th-century castle complex, enclosing a courtyard. The close connection between the church and presbytery, together with the surviving fortifications, offers several specific ways to explore local history.

Village Paths with Different Themes

The Sentier des Peintres winds through the village’s narrow streets to places that inspired 20th-century painters; their works are reproduced there on lava stone slabs. The Sentier du Patrimoine was inaugurated in September 2018, complementing the Sentier des Peintres and the Sentier des Plantes. It identifies ten emblematic monuments in the commune of Les Angles with information panels. The paths have different focuses: the Sentier des Peintres highlights places that inspired artists and reproductions of their works, while the Sentier du Patrimoine focuses on monuments and their explanations on information panels.

Astronomy at Parc du Cosmos

At the planetarium in Parc du Cosmos, animated images of constellations, the Milky Way, the Moon, planets and deep-sky objects such as nebulae and galaxies are projected. Guided tours follow paths through the garrigue, travelling through the universe—from the Sun to distant galaxies—and also cover the history of space exploration. These are two different formats: projections in the planetarium and a guided tour along paths that connects astronomy with the history of space exploration. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you are more interested in the projected images or the guided tour.

The Communal Bread Oven and Its History

The communal bread oven, known as the “four banal,” is part of the local heritage. A text from 1586 refers to its existence. On various occasions, volunteers fire up the oven again to bake bread and other foods. The four banal therefore brings together a historical reference and an occasional baking tradition.

Cycling Route near Les Angles

Near Les Angles, the ViaRhĂ´na passes beneath the TGV railway bridges; from there, a greenway runs to Aramon. The passage beneath the railway bridges and the continuation to Aramon are useful reference points when planning your stages. Check the route conditions before setting off. Unlike the themed village paths, this route focuses on the course of a cycling route and where it continues.
