Le Vigan: Culture, trails and regional cuisine
Accommodation in Le Vigan
Le Vigan lies in a forested mountain landscape between Aigoual and the Causses plateau in the Cévennes National Park. Its historic centre, regional culture and trails in the Pays Viganais offer different ways to shape a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Le Vigan, you might first consider whether local history, outdoor activities or regional cuisine will define your trip.
History and culture in town
In the historic centre, narrow lanes form a dense, grid-like network. The Vieux Pont is a Romanesque bridge dating from the 12th century; it was classified as a Monument Historique in 1928 and 1941. The Promenade des châtaigniers tells another part of the town’s history: once a festival venue, it was transformed into a promenade and was also classified as a Monument Historique. The bridge and promenade thus represent different historical periods in the townscape.
The Château d'Assas was a home of the Faventines family and was built in the Barris district between a courtyard and a garden. Today, it houses the intercommunal media library of the Pays Viganais. The garden of the Château d'Assas hosts numerous cultural events. The Château de Mareilles stands atop a rocky outcrop above the old town; terraces and gardens laid out in crosswise rows surround the building. While Assas’s present-day cultural use is part of its character, Mareilles is defined above all by its setting and gardens.
The Musée Cévenol preserves and showcases the heritage of the southern Causses and southern Cévennes. Its permanent exhibitions focus on ethnology and traditions, textiles, and art and literature. Together with the cultural events in the garden of the Château d'Assas, they illustrate two different aspects of cultural life in Le Vigan: permanent exhibitions and events.
Trails and landscape
From Le Vigan, 350 km of trails are available in the Pays Viganais for walking, horse riding or cycling. Ceven'Trail offers a different kind of activity, with more than 20 permanently established and marked running routes. For long-distance hiking, the signposted, 240 km Chemin de Saint Guilhem starts at Place du marché in Le Vigan. These are different formats: a trail network for several modes of travel, marked running routes and a long-distance hiking route.
The Circuit de l'Arre is a signposted circular route starting in Le Vigan and running along the riverbank. Its stony surface makes it unsuitable for pushchairs. The route is also linked to the silk industry of the Pays Viganais up to the beginning of the 21st century. This circular walk thus combines a riverside route with a theme from regional economic history.
At the Vieux Pont and Buscailhou site, access is free every day throughout the year; a path runs there along the right bank of the Arre. Check access before your trip.
The Gard section of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT passes through Le Vigan and offers 90 km of trails as well as narrow singletrack trails. On the Causse de Blandas, the Circuit des Mégalithes invites visitors to explore the megalithic heritage; the route can be travelled by bicycle or car. The two options therefore differ both in their focus and in the stated ways of getting around.
Regional cuisine
Restaurants in Le Vigan also feature regional produce: they serve trout from nearby rivers and offer a selection of dishes made with Cévennes sweet onions, Pélardon cheese, Reinette apples from Le Vigan and chestnuts. Alongside local history and trails, these ingredients add a culinary dimension to trip planning.
