Jonquières-Saint-Vincent brings together several historical periods in a landscape shaped by vineyards and orchards. The Via Domitia represents the history of Roman roads, churches preserve works of art and architectural features from different centuries, and the Moulins des Aires add historic mills to the picture. There is also an easy walk for families. If you are planning a stay, these specific cultural and landscape themes can help you understand the area without reducing it to a single monument.

Via Domitia and Chapelle Saint-Laurent

The Via Domitia crosses the municipal area of Jonquières-Saint-Vincent south of the village for about five kilometres. In its original form, it has been preserved there as an earth track with layered deposits of gravel and stones. This means the route can be described not only by its course, but also by its surviving structure. Another section of the Via Domitia within the municipal area is listed as a Monument historique.

The Chapelle Saint-Laurent offers a different perspective. It is one of the rare surviving buildings of its kind from the 12th century in the Gard. By decree of 24 December 1926, the chapel was classified as a Monument historique. The Via Domitia and the chapel therefore represent different kinds of heritage: a surviving stretch of road and a rare medieval building.

Churches and their historical heritage

The parish church of Saint Michel houses works of art and furnishings from several centuries. Two wooden paintings from the 16th century are classified as Monuments historiques. There are also three 19th-century paintings on canvas and two polychrome marble altars from the 18th and 19th centuries; these objects are listed as Monuments historiques. Their different materials and dates offer a distinct way to explore the church’s furnishings: the works range from wood and canvas to polychrome marble, and from the 16th to the 19th century.

Another church, Saint Vincent-de-Cannois, connects to a different period. It was built in the 12th century on the remains of a Roman altar. While the furnishings of Saint Michel span several centuries, Saint Vincent-de-Cannois brings together a medieval building and the remains of a Roman altar.

Marché Couvert and Moulins des Aires

The Marché Couvert was built as a covered market for table grapes and inaugurated in 1934. Its original purpose points to table-grape growing as part of the area’s history. The Marché Couvert site was completely renovated in 2011. The two dates therefore mark different chapters: the market’s inauguration in 1934 and the complete renovation of the site in 2011.

The Moulins des Aires comprise two mills built on a hill above the village between the 17th and 18th centuries. One 17th-century mill is operational and can produce flour. If you would like to see a demonstration, it is best to check in advance whether one is being offered. This keeps the documented ability to operate separate from the question of a specific demonstration date.

A walk through vineyards and orchards

The Balade à la fontaine de Tavie is an easy walk for families. It leads from the Chapelle Saint-Laurent to the Fontaine de Tavie, passes through vineyards and orchards, and includes a picnic area. The route adds a practical way to experience the area’s rural character alongside its buildings and historical heritage. Jonquières-Saint-Vincent is surrounded by vineyards and orchards; on this route, those same landscape features form part of a named walk. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning your trip: religious art, historic buildings, mills or an easy route for families.
