Cavillargues offers several points of interest for travellers interested in culture. A chapel, châteaux, a dolmen and an altar set into a house wall represent different architectural forms and historical periods. The fertile valley irrigated by the Auzigues is also part of the town’s character. You can explore the destination through its architectural and cultural history as well as its landscape.

Valley and landscape

Cavillargues lies in a fertile valley irrigated by the Auzigues. This perspective on the landscape complements the buildings and archaeological remains with another feature of the town. These are two different themes to consider when planning your trip: the history reflected in individual buildings and monuments, and the valley, with its combination of fertility and the Auzigues.

The chapel and Château de la Fare

The original chapel of the Ermitage Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Sépulcre dates from the early 12th century. The former chapel was classified as a Monument historique by decree dated 2 March 1981; the 19th-century section is excluded. The construction date of the original chapel and its later classification mark different historical layers. The scope of the protection is also clearly defined.

The Château de la Fare is built onto the medieval town wall of Cavillargues. Its Renaissance façade is decorated with sculptures. The building thus brings together two architectural reference points: its connection to the medieval wall and the Renaissance design of its façade. The château is privately owned and is open to visitors during the Journées du Patrimoine. As access is tied to this event, check the dates before your trip.

Architecture and older remains

Two large round towers define the main façade of the Château Nicolay. Two historic mullioned windows have also been preserved on the second upper floor. The towers give the façade its distinctive structure, while the windows add a detail on a particular floor. If you pay attention to different architectural scales, each of these features offers its own perspective on the château.

The Dolmen de Peyre Pecoulade takes you back to a much earlier period. It was erected at the end of the Neolithic period, around 3000 BC. The ruined megalithic monument measures 4 m by 2.60 m. Its approximate date places it in historical context, while its dimensions and surviving condition provide a different kind of information about the monument.

A Roman funerary altar is set into the wall of the presbytery in Cavillargues and is visible. Unlike the dolmen, which is described as a megalithic monument, the altar is encountered as part of a house wall. Both remains point to distant periods, but represent different forms of cultural heritage: the Neolithic dolmen and the Roman funerary altar.

Walking route and cultural events

The La Chapelle du Saint Sépulcre circular route begins and ends at Place Étienne Brunel in Cavillargues. This gives you a specific starting and ending point for finding your way around the town. Another way to explore the cultural heritage is through the association Les Amis du Saint-Sépulcre, which organises concerts, guided tours and events at the chapel during the Journées du Patrimoine.

If you plan to visit the Château de la Fare or attend events at the chapel, check the specific dates of the Journées du Patrimoine before you travel. This makes it easy to distinguish the town’s different themes: architectural history is central to the chapel and châteaux, the dolmen represents an earlier period, and the funerary altar reflects the Roman past. The Auzigues valley complements these cultural perspectives with its landscape.
