If you’re looking for a hotel in Bessèges, you can start by deciding which aspects of the town you’d like to shape your stay. The Cèze runs through Bessèges, while its church architecture, mining history and local culture offer specific themes to guide your travel plans. The landscape, historical details and events sit alongside one another, making it possible to choose a focus without reducing the town to a single attraction.

Landscape and nature

The Cèze runs through Bessèges. The town is surrounded by upland landscapes of forests, rivers and valleys. Bessèges is also one of the 20 municipalities covered by the “Haute Cèze” Natura 2000 site. If you’re planning nature activities in this area, check its boundaries and management arrangements in advance.

Notre-Dame and local history

Notre-Dame de Bessèges brings together several datable aspects of the town’s history. Construction began in 1864 and was completed in 1868. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Sainte-Barbe and Saint-Eloi. The pediment bears the inscription “Liberté-Egalité-Fraternité, République Française”. The organ gallery houses an organ created in 1876; on 5 September 1991, it was protected as a movable monument historique. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s construction period and dedication from the instrument’s later creation and protection. The Mas de la Cantonade is considered probably the oldest residential building in Bessèges—a different point of local interest from Notre-Dame’s precisely dated construction period.

Mining history and trails

Mining history is another focus. The disaster at the Mines de Lalle took place in 1861. The Parcours d'interprétation de la mine de Bessèges offers insights into miners’ lives, their tools and the main phases of mining. The route is 2.5 km long, with ten information panels created in 2025 marking out the walk. Check trail conditions before setting out. The disaster represents a single historical event, while the trail covers several aspects of mining.

The MI.A.O.U. in the Cévennes offers a different kind of exploration: it can be visited independently throughout the year by following the streets and paths of Bessèges. This lets you choose between a themed walk focused on mining and an independent exploration of the town.

Corso and cultural events

Bessèges’ first Corso took place in 1905; local associations build the floats. The Corso festival takes place on the first weekend in September. Check the date for the relevant year before your trip.

From May to September, the Maison Perséphone hosts “Dimanches au jardin” once a month, with performances, communal meals, exhibitions and concerts. Specific dates can change from year to year, so check the dates for your travel year. The Maison Perséphone also offers workshops in artistic practices, which may not always be available.

Planning to fish

Day and weekly fishing permits are sold at the Bessèges tourist information office. If fishing is part of your stay, confirm the permit rules and points of sale in advance.
