Aramon: Historic Buildings and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Aramon
Aramon offers a range of themes to help you plan your stay: architectural history at named sites, as well as hiking trails with a specified circular route or a focus on landscape and views. If you are looking for a hotel in Aramon, you can first decide whether local history or the hiking scenery better suits your travel interests.
Local History Along Streets and at Buildings
Rue Pitot runs through the historic center of Aramon from east to west. At the corner of Rue Pitot and Passage de Laudun is Maison Girard. It is one of the oldest houses in Aramon and dates from 1498. Its location connects the house to two clearly named streets; at the same time, Rue Pitot gives the historic center an east-west orientation.
Les Halles was rebuilt in 1742 using dressed stone. Porte de Montfrin dates from 1774; it was previously fortified. The dates describe different aspects: Les Halles was rebuilt using dressed stone, while the date for the Porte refers to a building that was formerly fortified. For the town’s history, this comparison brings together material, construction date, and former status without treating the two sites as equivalent.
Church, Château, and Recorded History
Église Saint-Pancrace is part of the historic center, and its fabric dates from the 12th to the 17th century. A different date is significant for Château d’Aramon: it was partially listed as a Monument historique on November 23, 1995. The Château includes a 12-meter-high wall that formed part of the fortifications. The church and the Château therefore have different chronological associations: the church’s fabric spans several centuries, while the Château was specifically listed in 1995.
Henri Pitot was born in 1695 at number 7 of the Maison natale d’Henri Pitot. According to local tradition, the Maison des Cardinaux served as a refuge for the Bishop of Lodève, Plantavit de la Pause, in 1633. The Foire de la St-Martin was established in 1703 and continues to this day. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the specific event dates separately. Aramon’s quay is now a promenade, contrasting with the dated buildings.
Hiking Trails and Practical Information
There are two different points of reference for the hiking trails. Les Castillones is a 10.5-kilometer circular hike starting in Aramon. The Sentier des Garrigues focuses on landscape and views: the route passes through the garrigue on the heights above Aramon and offers numerous views of the RhĂ´ne and surrounding area. When choosing a hike, you can compare the explicitly stated circular route and distance of Les Castillones with the landscape character of the Sentier des Garrigues.
For the Sentier des Garrigues, Parking des Quais, next to the tourist office, is recommended. Check parking information and current route conditions before setting out.
