Alès: Mining History, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Alès
Alès brings together industrial history, art, archaeology and nature. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these themes: the Mine Témoin represents the mining industry, museums are dedicated to art and archaeological finds, while parks and the long-distance Chemin de Stevenson offer their own points of interest for nature lovers. This lets you choose the focus of your stay.
Fort Vauban and mining history
Fort Vauban was built in 1688 to the plans of the engineer Vauban and served as a prison for Protestants. It is closed to the public. Its history connects architectural and religious history.
The Mine Témoin d’Alès has 700 metres of tunnels, considered the largest naturally accessible tunnel network in France. A guided tour with commentary throughout traces the history of mining from 1880 to the present day. The mine was a mining school established in 1945 to train mining apprentices. Here, a specific history of vocational training meets a broader view of mining over time. Check seasonal access conditions before visiting.
Art and archaeology
The Musée Pierre André Benoit presents an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art. It also houses 450 books created by PAB that combine poetry and painting; this collection is considered unique in France.
The Musée du Colombier houses an archaeological collection of finds dating from the Middle Palaeolithic through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. The difference in focus is clear: the Musée Pierre André Benoit centres on modern and contemporary art and PAB’s books, while the Musée du Colombier houses archaeological finds from ancient periods.
Green spaces and plants
The Parc Méditerranéen de Conilhères covers 2.2 hectares and is managed ecologically to promote biodiversity in the city. The park includes an olive grove, Mediterranean plantings, an orchard and a woodland area. Insect habitats and bird nesting boxes complement these features and create a variety of habitats.
Since April 2007, the Parc Floral Les Camellias de la Prairie has been classified as a recognised collection by the French National Conservatory for Specialised Plant Collections. The two parks therefore have different focal points: the Parc Méditerranéen centres on ecological management and diverse habitats, while the Parc Floral is notable for its recognised collection.
Alès on the GR 70 long-distance trail
Alès lies on the Chemin de Stevenson (GR 70) long-distance trail, which runs from Le Puy-en-Velay via Saint-Jean-du-Gard to Alès. If you include the trail in your trip plans, check the trail conditions before setting out. This distinguishes the hiking theme from the specific points of interest offered by the museums and parks.
