Saint-Ferriol sits on a rocky promontory overlooking two valleys. From here, the view stretches to the mountains of Capcir and Vallespir; Pic de Bugarach is also visible. The village offers two clear reference points when choosing a place to stay: its position above the valleys and its village history. Historical landmarks include the château above the village, the church and the old washhouse.

The château and its history

The Château de Saint-Ferriol stands on a platform above the village. The first château was mentioned as early as 1155. The present château was probably built in the late 16th or early 17th century; it has been listed as a historic monument since 17 September 1999. These details relate to different periods: the date 1155 marks an early mention, while the dating of the present building remains tentative. This helps place the village's long history in context without conflating early records with the current building.

Church, Calvary and crosses

The church is also one of Saint-Ferriol's historical landmarks. It was completely restored in 1892, fitted with stained-glass windows and extended with a sacristy. In the village centre, a Calvary depicting Christ on the cross stands between the church and the château. Four crosses stand at junctions of local roads. They were erected by earlier generations and bear witness to past customs and events. Together, these buildings reflect different aspects of the village's religious and community life.

The old village washhouse

Before running water and washing machines were introduced, the old washhouse was where villagers washed their clothes. Its basins have been refilled with water and are supplied by a closed-loop system with ecological filtration. The washhouse brings together its former role as a shared space for everyday life and its present-day design. The village streetscape also features wrought-iron sculptures and several historic railings. Some retired blacksmiths decorate Saint-Ferriol with these free of charge.

Olive oil from Saint-Ferriol

Olive growing at Domaine de Moucha is also part of the local character. The family-run estate tends 1,400 olive trees across four hectares; the trees were planted in 1999. Arbequina olives from its own orchard are used to make the olive oil. The Domaine produces and sells olive oil. If buying it is important to your plans, check the current sales arrangements in advance. The château, village history, landscape and olive oil offer different ways to experience a stay in Saint-Ferriol.
