Puivert offers travellers several distinct highlights: medieval architecture, the Musée du Quercorb, activities at Lac de Fontclaire and hiking opportunities. Some activities are tied to a particular season, specific days or an annual calendar; bear these time frames in mind when planning.

Château de Puivert and Musée du Quercorb

Château de Puivert is considered one of the best-preserved castle buildings from the first half of the 14th century. This gives medieval history a tangible focal point in Puivert. Those interested in this period can also view the castle in connection with the Musée du Quercorb: the museum’s collection includes nine medieval musical instruments reconstructed from the sculptures of musicians at the Château.

Through visual and audio displays, the Musée du Quercorb presents everyday life in the Quercorb region at the beginning of the 20th century. Two different themes therefore come together here: medieval musical reconstructions connected with the Château and insights into daily life in a later period. During the season, the museum also offers guided tours with storytelling and singing. If these tours are important to your plans, check the current dates before your trip.

The easy Sentier des Troubadours connects the Musée du Quercorb with Château de Puivert. This gives culture enthusiasts the opportunity to include both named sites in their travel plans. It differs from the challenging Maquis de Picaussel route, which leads to a cave, viewpoints and the former post of the Maquis resistance fighters.

Lac de Fontclaire: swimming, market and fishing

At Lac de Fontclaire, mountains and water create a striking landscape, with views of Château de Puivert. In 2026, swimming will be supervised from 1 July to 31 August. If you are planning your trip around this period, check the information about swimming supervision before setting out.

In summer, a night market is held at Lac de Fontclaire every Wednesday evening. Local producers and craftspeople offer local specialities there. As dates and vendors may change, it is advisable to check the specific market date in advance. Fishing is permitted on the shore next to the refreshment bar and is managed by the La Gaule Puivertaine association. It is possible from March to September, in accordance with the annual fishing season calendar; therefore, check your plans against this calendar.

Hiking and other activities

The start of the Maquis de Picaussel route is in the hamlet of Lescale in Puivert, at the car park behind the chapel. From Lescale, the challenging route leads to a cave, viewpoints and the former post of the Maquis resistance fighters. This offers a different hiking experience from the easy Sentier des Troubadours, which connects the museum and the Château. The two routes differ both in their stated difficulty and in their destinations.

The Sentier Cathare also leads to Puivert within a wider regional context: the Château is included in its shared section through the Pyrénées Audoises. Altogether, the Sentier Cathare comprises two variants and more than 150 kilometres of hiking trails. The Puivert/Comus section was changed in 2025. Check the trail markers before setting out so you can plan your hike along the current route.

Another summer activity is the introductory glider flights offered by the Planeurs de Puivert. Along with the seasonal activities at the lake and the museum tours, these make for a travel itinerary whose possible highlights vary depending on when you visit.
