Pieusse sits on a hill overlooking the River Aude and the Razès Valley. East of the village, vineyards cover the hills, producing Blanquette de Limoux. The landscape, wine and historic buildings give a stay here a variety of highlights.

Wine Country and Domaine de Fourn

The Domaine de Fourn vineyard covers 40 hectares of sunny slopes in a Mediterranean climate. The family-run winery offers the four Limoux appellations: Blanquette de Limoux, Blanquette de Limoux Méthode Ancestrale, Crémant de Limoux and AOP Limoux Rouge. Its stated range also includes IGP Pays d’Oc wines in red, rosé and white. As the selection may change, it is advisable to check in advance if you are looking for a particular range.

Visitors can tour a seven-metre-deep underground cellar at Domaine de Fourn, taste the winery’s products and enjoy the panoramic views. The cellar, wine tasting and landscape each offer a different focus. Check current access arrangements when planning your visit.

Wine Walks and Regional Tastings

The guided wine walk at Domaine de Fourn offers insights into the secrets of the vineyard and the wines of Limoux. It is described as a seasonal activity running from early July to the end of August; check the specific dates in advance. Several food stops include tastings of Pebradou, olives and cured meats, paired with the winery’s vintages. Unlike the cellar tour, this experience focuses on the vineyards, the wines of Limoux and complementary tastings.

A Walk Through the Vineyards

The Boucle de Pieusse is a family-friendly walk through the vineyards. It starts at the town hall square; the route is listed as five kilometres long and taking one hour and 30 minutes. This makes it easy to factor the walk into your day. Check the local signposts before setting off. If you are choosing between the Boucle and the guided wine walk, you can compare two different options: a walking route with a specified distance and duration, or a seasonal guided tour with insights into the vineyards and wines.

Churches and History of Pieusse

The former rural church of Saint-André dates mainly from the 11th and 12th centuries. Its single-nave layout has no chapels, and the semicircular apse features Lombard decoration. The present-day church of Saint-Genest was built in the 14th century on the site of an older building dating to 1088. It is an example of Southern Gothic architecture. The two churches thus represent different architectural styles and periods.

The Oratoire de Pieusse was listed as a historic monument in 1965. It stands at the crossroads of two historic routes: one led from Pieusse to Saint-André and Pomas, while the other led to a ferry across the Aude. A cross decorated with raised scallop shells bears the inscription “1652”.

The castrum associated with the Château de Pieusse is also part of the village’s history; it was first mentioned in 1119. Between 1222 and 1225, a Cathar council was held in Pieusse to establish a new bishopric of Razès and appoint a new bishop. These dates add political and religious events of the Middle Ages to the architectural history.
