Moussan: Lock, Heritage and Horse Riding
Accommodation in Moussan
The Écluse de Moussoulens reflects water management on the Canal de la Robine, while the religious buildings bear traces of history; Les Écuries de Taillevent adds horse-riding activities to the picture.
Lock, river and hilly landscape
The Écluse de Moussoulens in Moussan is a simple lock on the Canal de la Robine. Since 1682, it has regulated the flow of the Aude. This structure is notable not only for its canal, but also for regulating the river’s flow—an interesting point for travellers interested in water management. Another aspect of water management is the division of water between the Aude, the Cesse, the connecting canal to the Canal du Midi and the Canal de la Robine.
The Sentier de l’Écluse de Moussoulens runs along the banks where the river and canals meet. The meeting of these waterways therefore shapes the landscape along the trail. The ZNIEFF “Collines de Moussan” offers a different perspective: on the hillside, it encompasses coniferous forests, extensive areas of farmland and more open grassland where remarkable plant species grow. Different forms of vegetation and land use can be found side by side here.
Religious buildings and traces of history
The Chapelle Saint-Laurent has a single-nave hall and a flat-ended choir, separated by a raised, chamfered triumphal arch. These architectural details describe a clearly structured building: the nave and choir are its two sections, with the arch marking the division between them.
Over the course of its history, the chapel became a place of pilgrimage and a stop for pilgrims and monks travelling between the Cistercian estate of Fontcalvy and Fontfroide Abbey. This role is part of the building’s historical significance. After a long period of decline, the Comité Saint-Laurent association bought the largely ruined chapel in 1965 and began its restoration.
The Sentier de l’Écluse de Moussoulens also passes Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. The church was built in the 13th century on the site of a former plague hospital. Its façade bears the motto “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité”—a striking detail that links the church’s history to a visible inscription.
Horse-riding activities at Les Écuries de Taillevent
Les Écuries de Taillevent in Moussan offers horseback rides and riding tours along trails between vineyards, pine forests, the river and the canal. These landscape features give these activities a different focus from views of the lock, riverbanks or hillsides.
Guided pony rides on foot are available for younger children. These are distinct from riding lessons in riding arenas with a qualified riding instructor. Horseback rides and riding tours are another option. If you would like to plan one of these activities, it is advisable to check availability for your intended visit.
