A specific cultural landmark in Montferrand is the collection in the parish church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul. It comprises 13 Gothic disc-shaped steles and fragments of steles originating from a cemetery. The pieces are dated to the 13th century, possibly also the 14th century. Since 11 May 1977, the collection has been designated as a protected object. Their origin, form and dating offer different insights: the cemetery origin places the steles in a funerary context, their Gothic form shapes their art-historical classification, and the dating places them in a medieval period. The designation adds a separate protection status with a precise date. This allows the collection to be viewed as a group with its own provenance and historical classification.

Seuil de Naurouze: elevation and watershed

At Seuil de Naurouze, the highest point of the Canal du Midi lies at 189.43 metres above sea level. At the same time, the water there divides and flows toward the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Elevation and water division highlight two aspects of the Seuil: the elevation value identifies its height, while the watershed marks the two drainage directions. A watershed is a boundary from which water flows in different directions; here, these are the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The Seuil can therefore be described both by its elevation and by the distribution of the water.

Hiking and cycling at the Seuil

The “Balade au seuil de Naurouze” hike begins at the Seuil de Naurouze car park. From there, it follows the D218 road southwest to the former mill at Naurouze. This gives the starting point, route and destination: the car park marks the starting point, the road and compass direction describe the route, and the mill is the destination. The term “former mill” preserves the historical status of the destination.

The first stage of the Véloccitanie route from the Seuil de Naurouze follows the engineering works of the Canal du Midi by bicycle and is about 50 kilometres long. The focus differs from that of the hike: “Balade au seuil de Naurouze” names the former mill as its destination, while the cycling stage focuses on the engineering works and approximate route length. When choosing between the two routes, you can consider whether you prefer to follow a hike to a specific destination or explore the Canal du Midi by bicycle along its water-management structures.

Peyre Clouque archaeological site

The Peyre Clouque site preserves the remains of ancient baths, two early Christian churches and a necropolis. A necropolis is a burial site; here, alongside the baths and churches, it forms a distinct group of archaeological remains. The different terms help distinguish the finds: the baths are ancient, while the churches are early Christian. The site thus encompasses different types of remains rather than describing just a single building.

These sites offer different perspectives on cultural heritage: in Montferrand, it is the protected collection of steles with its cemetery origins; Peyre Clouque is distinguished by several types of archaeological remains. This comparison helps distinguish a named collection in a parish church from a site featuring different remains.
