Lapalme: Nature, Water Sports and History
Accommodation in Lapalme
Lapalme brings together several highlights that you can consider separately when planning your stay: the lagoon landscape of the Étang de La Palme, water sports, salt production and historic buildings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Lapalme, you can tailor your itinerary to whether you’d most like to experience nature, outdoor activities or heritage.
Lagoon and Mediterranean nature
The Étang de La Palme lies at the heart of a Natura 2000 site and is recognised as a sensitive natural area for its biodiversity. It also has one of the last natural channels between a lagoon and the sea on the French Mediterranean coast. At Cap Romarin, garrigue scrubland meets dry grasslands. Numerous dry-stone walls shape the habitats here, which are home to exceptional flora and fauna. Lapalme therefore offers contrasting natural landscapes: the lagoon and the dry, wall-lined areas around the Cap.
Water sports, beach and hiking
The lagoon is suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing thanks to its winds and shallow water. Local conditions and designated zones may vary, so check the conditions on site in advance. You can go hiking at Cap Romarin. Plage du Rouet de La Palme is a natural fine-sand beach stretching 2.5 kilometres.
A tourist listing updated in February 2025 listed EBKITE as offering kitesurfing introductions and courses in Lapalme. Booking and operating conditions may change, so check the current offer in advance. The activities also differ in how they need to be planned: local conditions and designated zones for water sports may vary, while the route through the salt pans has a specified length.
Salin de La Palme: salt and exploration
Salin de La Palme covers more than 400 hectares and is one of the most important salt-producing areas in the Aude department. Visitors can explore the salt pans by electric train or electric scooter and learn about salt production. Check the timetable in advance, as times may change.
The signposted “Des Salines au Rouet” trail is four kilometres long and runs from the Salin de La Palme car park to a railway crossing. Its length, starting point and destination make it a clearly defined route option; check trail conditions and signage on site. The Boutique du Saunier at Salin de La Palme stocks fleur de sel, flavoured salts, wine and regional products. The availability of individual products may vary.
Town gate and cultural landscape
Porte de la Barbacane is a 16th-century town gate and is listed as a historic monument. It is the main entrance to the fortified village of La Palme. The gate offers a tangible connection to the town’s history and its former fortifications.
Chapelle Saint Pancrace stands among vineyards and garrigue scrubland, near the village of La Palme and the ancient Via Domitia. Its setting connects the chapel to a cultural landscape where vineyards, garrigue and a historic route meet. Together with the town gate, it offers a different focus from the lagoon, beach and salt pans: here, the emphasis is on architectural history and the chapel’s historical setting.
