Bages: Village History, Art and Lagoon
Accommodation in Bages
Bages brings together a medieval village on a rocky outcrop, art venues and the Étang de Bages-Sigean. When choosing a place to stay, village history, culture and the lagoon offer different points of focus. The location above the Étang shapes the views across the water, while historic buildings and art venues provide their own points of interest. Walks and hikes also reveal different sides of the village.
Village History and Viewpoints
Bages lies on a rocky outcrop above the Étang de Bages-Sigean, offering views of the lagoon. In the medieval quarter, the houses stand close together, making the layout of the old village immediately apparent. The Sun Gate was once the main entrance to the fortified old village. The sundial dates from the 17th century and offers a distinct historical reference.
The Church of Saint Martin stands at the highest point of the village. From there, the view extends across the landscape from a height of 35 metres. Together with the view of the lagoon from the rocky outcrop, it offers another perspective on Bages and its surroundings.
Art and Concerts
The Maison des Arts is a municipal art gallery in the former presbytery, which was restored as an exhibition space. Admission to the gallery is free, and it also has a terrace overlooking the lagoon. Check the current access conditions before your visit, as the access policy may change. The exhibition programme also changes, so it is worth checking the latest dates.
L'Étangd'Art organises contemporary art exhibitions in Bages. The gallery and these exhibitions offer different points of interest for art lovers: at the Maison des Arts, the restored former presbytery is part of the setting, while L'Étangd'Art focuses on contemporary art.
Music is also part of the cultural programme: numerous concerts are held throughout the year at the Espace Louis Daudé in Bages. Concert dates and venues vary. Check in advance which concerts fall within your stay.
Circular Routes with Different Time Commitments
The Dans le sillage de l’anguille circular route starts at Bages Town Hall. It is 2 kilometres long and takes one hour. Along the route, 13 information panels explain the natural and cultural heritage of Bages, as well as traditional activities. The circular route therefore combines a clearly defined time commitment with information about local themes.
La boucle des Caunes is an easy 5-kilometre hike. It takes 2 hours and 30 minutes and has an elevation gain of 100 metres. The route climbs a hill above Bages. From there, views extend across the Étang de Bages-Sigean and the Massif de la Clape, all the way to the sea.
For a comparison of the time required, the 2-kilometre circular route takes one hour, while La boucle des Caunes takes two and a half hours. Check the route details locally before setting out.
Birds and Trips on the Lagoon
At the Étang de Bages-Sigean, you can spot flamingos, herons, great egrets, ducks, wading birds and small birds of the reed beds. Which species you actually see depends on the season and may vary. If you plan to go birdwatching, seasonal changes are something to factor into your plans.
The Bateauthèque allows residents and visitors to hire kayaks, small sailboats or dinghies and go out on the lagoon when the weather is suitable. Conditions of use and availability may change; check the current options in advance.
