Villeneuve-Saint-Georges combines historic buildings and cultural attractions with parks, the banks of the Seine and opportunities for outdoor activities. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are mainly interested in architecture and art or in landscapes and exercise.

Culture, History and Events

The Église Saint-Georges has major construction phases dating from the 13th and 16th centuries. It was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 16 July 1925. Two distinct historical aspects are therefore central to the church: its construction history and its protected status.

The history of transport is also present in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. RATP’s historic vehicle collection is preserved and maintained in a former marshalling yard. It comprises almost 100 models from the metro, bus, train and tram networks. Together, the vehicles document nearly a century of technological, industrial and aesthetic change.

Since 5 February 2020, a permanent digital museum has been available at the Micro-Folie in the Salle Falbert, 14 bis rue Pasteur; admission is free. The Musée numérique presents thousands of works from major national institutions, including the Louvre and the Château de Versailles. The Micro-Folie’s Fablab offers introductory workshops using digital tools such as a 3D printer and a cutting machine. As the programme may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings before visiting.

The Maison des artistes Frida Kahlo holds around a dozen exhibitions each year and offers art classes for all levels and age groups from four years old. Class schedules may change, so check the current dates if you are planning a visit or to take part. The Sud-Est Théâtre complements the cultural offering with a varied programme covering all performing arts. It caters to all age groups, including younger visitors, has a capacity of up to 535 people and has been part of the city’s cultural landscape for more than a century. Its programme changes seasonally.

The Espace André Bouquet presents artistic, scientific and historical exhibitions throughout the year, roughly once a month; guided tours are also available. The current exhibition calendar is useful when planning a visit. Another topic in the city’s cultural history is Fort de Villeneuve-Saint-Georges: an example of 19th-century military architecture, it covers 11 hectares.

Parks, the Banks of the Seine and Outdoor Activities

The green spaces each have their own character. The Parc de la Chevrette features planted vineyards and areas with fruit trees. The Parc de Beauregard became a public space around 1896. Its history goes back further: around 1820, landscape designer Vergniaud transformed the former château garden and the Beauregard estate into a romantic-style park. Since 31 July 1945, the Parc de Beauregard has been listed as a protected site. Its design, public use and protected status thus mark different stages in its history.

Since late 2023, the Parc sauvage has been home to Villeneuve-Saint-Georges’ first LPO bird sanctuary. The most recent count recorded around 20 different bird species there. The Arc Boisé begins behind the Fontaine Saint-Martin and extends across three départements and several municipalities. The area covers more than 3,000 hectares and is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

From March to November, the Arc Boisé offers wildlife observation, hikes, twilight outings and photography workshops. If these events are important to your trip, check the current seasonal programme. This will help you distinguish these activities from the permanent paths and recreational areas along the Seine.

The redevelopment of the Seine riverbanks, completed between 2013 and the end of 2015, created a footpath, cycle paths and recreational areas with benches and picnic tables along more than two kilometres between the Piste des Marronniers and the SNCF bridge in Choisy-le-Roi. EuroVelo 3 is also relevant to cycling travellers: Villeneuve-Saint-Georges is the last municipality in the Val-de-Marne département on this cycle route.

Water skiing and wakeboarding offer another way to enjoy the Seine: Barefoot Style offers both activities in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. Check the operating arrangements before your trip. When looking for a hotel in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, use the focus of your trip as a starting point: churches, collections and theatres are cultural attractions, while parks, riverbanks and the activities mentioned above offer landscapes and exercise.
