Maisons-Alfort: Architecture, Museums and Riverside Walks
Accommodation in Maisons-Alfort
Maisons-Alfort combines a diverse architectural heritage with riverside walks and attractions focused on nature and the environment. When planning your trip, you can choose from different themes: a signposted circular trail passes through all seven districts, while museums and distinctive buildings offer insights into the city’s history.
Explore the city on foot and along the river
The signposted PR42 circular trail starts at Maisons-Alfort–Alfortville station and passes through all seven districts. It includes 32 sights where you can explore the city’s architectural and landscape heritage. The trail brings together different aspects of Maisons-Alfort in one outing. Check the trail markers and route before setting out.
Another option for a walk or jog is the Promenade Paul Cézanne, which follows the river for more than four kilometres and is used by walkers and joggers. The two routes differ in length and focus: the PR42 passes through the districts and includes sights, while the promenade is a longer route by the water. On the banks of the Marne at Pont de Charenton, the riverside forms a valuable ecosystem for local wildlife and plant life.
Green spaces also shape the urban landscape. Maisons-Alfort has 75 hectares of publicly accessible green space, connected by a network of green walking paths. Nature and walking routes are therefore as much a part of the area as its buildings and museums. Parc La Fontaine also has a free skate park for skateboarding, inline skating, scootering and BMX.
Museums and historical heritage
Founded in 1766, the Musée Fragonard is one of the oldest museums in France. Its collection includes thousands of anatomical specimens, skeletons and écorchés. Individual visits do not require a reservation; check visitor information before your trip.
Since September 2003, the Musée de Maisons-Alfort has been housed in the Château de Réghat. The building dates from the 18th century and is one of the oldest in the city. The garden-facing façades and roofs of the château have been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1979. One of the museum’s crypts is dedicated to archaeological remains found in Maisons-Alfort.
Other buildings illustrate different periods in architectural history. Sainte-Agnès is a modernist church associated with the “Chantiers du Cardinal” movement. Its nave is angled 30 degrees from the main façade; the church has been classified as a historic monument since 21 December 1984. Fort de Charenton is also part of the area’s historical heritage: it was the first of 16 forts built around Paris in the 19th century. The École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort is the world’s oldest grande école still located at its original site.
Nature, the environment and farm life
The Maison de l’Environnement is housed in a former petrol station that has been repurposed on the banks of the Marne. Its year-round programme includes exhibitions, workshops and events focused on environmental awareness and biodiversity. Individual dates may change, so check which activities are taking place before your trip.
At the Ferme de Maisons-Alfort, you can see a variety of farm animals. Information panels explain farm activities and the animals. Regular workshops and events are also held there, including sheep shearing, “farm apprentice” days and Easter egg hunts during the Easter holidays. Specific dates may change.
Maisons-Alfort offers several different ways to shape your trip: districts and sights along the PR42, architecture and museum collections, as well as walks, green spaces and activities related to biodiversity and farming. What you choose to focus on depends on whether you are more interested in the built heritage, a riverside walk, or the environment and farm life.
