Thoury-Férottes can be explored for trip planning through two different interests: historic landmarks and golf. If you are looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on archaeological and architectural themes or on golf practice. The town’s history is presented through named objects and building forms; for golf, there is a specifically described practice facility. The historical information ranges from the Neolithic period to a renovation in 2015.

Menhir and early local history

A menhir is an upright standing stone; in the case of Pierre Cornoise, approximate measurements provide further context. The Pierre Cornoise menhir measures about 4.55 meters in length and approximately 1.25 meters in diameter at its widest point. The two measurements describe different axes of the stone and make its shape easier to picture. It is also known as Pierre Cordière. According to the 1889 list of historic monuments, it is classified as a historic monument. At the same time, it is considered evidence that Thoury-Férottes has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The two dates refer to different things: the Neolithic period concerns the interpretation of the town’s settlement history, while 1889 is the year the menhir was classified as a monument.

Architectural history and individual sacred objects

The surviving elements of the former structure of La Forteresse are the drawbridge tower and two square towers. While the menhir is classified mainly through its measurements and its interpretation as evidence of settlement, the focus here is on specific architectural forms.

The bell of the Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul dates from 1669 and was classified as a historic monument in 1942. The carved wooden altarpiece of the main altar dates from 1769 and was listed for protection on October 17, 1978. In each case, the pair of dates refers to different stages: the object’s creation and its later classification as a monument. This makes it possible to distinguish between the date of origin and heritage protection.

Washhouses and mills along the Orvanne

The banks of the Orvanne are lined with municipal or privately owned washhouses made of brick, stone, and wood. The Bichereau washhouse was renovated in 2015. In the past, two watermills were also operating along the Orvanne, including Moulin Neuf. This highlights two different aspects of the river’s history: washhouses as structures along the river and mills as a former use of its waters.
