Sainte-Colombe: Countryside, Church and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Sainte-Colombe
Sainte-Colombe brings together landscapes, architectural history, and a hiking trail through the valleys. The Ru des Méances runs through the village; Sainte-Colombe also has a distinctly varied relief, with an extensive agricultural plateau. A watercourse and an open, agriculturally shaped upland thus stand side by side as distinct features of the village.
Rural Heritage and Church Architecture
Le Mez de la Madeleine preserves a rural architectural heritage shaped by Brie farmhouses. The Cluniac priory in Le Mez de la Madeleine is also among the village’s historic buildings: it dates back to the 11th century and is now privately owned.
Sainte-Colombe Church dates from the 11th to 12th centuries. Its Romanesque features include a nave and transept of equal height, rectangular piers, and Romanesque arches. The nave and transept are the lengthwise and crosswise sections of the church building; their equal height is a specific feature of its design. The bell tower was added in 1754 and has a so-called “Chapeau” roof, a style rarely found in Brie. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s early construction history from the much later addition of the tower’s distinctive design.
Close Barbe: Monument and Hiking Trail
The leper house at Close Barbe is listed as a historic monument. Protected features include its two columns with capitals and four bays with preserved groin vaults. Its foundation is attributed to Henri I, known as “Le Libéral,” Count of Champagne. Henri I served as Count of Champagne from 1152 to 1182.
The “À la découverte de Saint-Loup-de-Naud” hiking trail runs along the perimeter wall of the former leper house, crosses the D403, and then reaches the railway station. The route reaches Saint-Loup via a hillside along the Voulzie and passes through the valleys of the Dragon and the Voulzie on its way to Sainte-Colombe. If you wish to follow this trail, check the signs on site. This helps you understand the route through its specific waypoints and landscape features.
Train and Bus for Planning Your Trip
Sainte-Colombe is served by rail line P, which connects Provins with Paris-Gare de l’Est. Probus bus line 17 connects the village with Provins and Longueville. These two options offer different ways to plan your journey; check the latest Transilien and bus timetables for specific travel information.
