Saint-Augustin: Heritage, the Aubetin and the Apple Festival
Accommodation in Saint-Augustin
Saint-Augustin brings together several clearly distinct interests for a stay: architectural and religious history, paths along the Aubetin, and a seasonal apple festival. The Obélisque and Chapelle Sainte-Aubierge represent different aspects of the area’s heritage; the Sentiers de l’Aubetin and Cascade de l’Aubetin put the river in the spotlight. The Fête de la Pomme adds a specific October weekend as a possible reason to visit. You can therefore choose when to travel based on what you would like to experience in Saint-Augustin.
Heritage: the Obélisque and Sainte Aubierge
The Obélisque in Saint-Augustin belongs to a major construction phase in the fourth quarter of the 18th century; its design is attributed to Claude Nicolas Ledoux. A decree dated 19 June 1972 listed the Obélisque as a Monument historique. The construction phase in the late 18th century and its protected status in 1972 mark different stages in its history.
The Chapelle Sainte-Aubierge is considered one of Saint-Augustin’s two outstanding heritage sites. The Fontaine de Dévotion is associated with the cult of Sainte Aubierge. Sainte Aubierge is considered the third abbess of Faremoutiers; according to local tradition, she came to pray at a spring in the village. Thus, a chapel and a Fontaine are linked to a religious tradition that encompasses Faremoutiers and a spring in Saint-Augustin. For choosing what interests you, this offers a different perspective from the Obélisque: the focus is on devotion to Sainte Aubierge and the tradition associated with it.
Along the Aubetin: paths, the Cascade and a picnic break
The Sentiers de l’Aubetin invite you to take a walk along the river. Along the paths, you can see the Aubetin’s meanders as they wind between stones and streams. From the walk, you can continue to the holiest place in the village. The walk therefore takes in both the river landscape and a cultural destination.
Another natural stop is the Cascade de l’Aubetin in the hamlet of Le Poncet. It is a natural spectacle of rapids. Visitors can stop there and enjoy the natural surroundings. Unlike a walk along the Sentiers, this stop focuses on the rapids and the surrounding area.
For a break outdoors, the Aire de pique-nique du Montcet is near the Montcet washhouse on the Aubetin and has three tables. The specific number of tables is a practical point to consider if you would like to include a break in your day’s plans. Unlike the paths and the Cascade, the Aire is a dedicated picnic area by the river.
When to travel for the Fête de la Pomme
The Fête de la Pomme offers a different, date-specific reason to visit: it takes place on the third weekend of October on Saint-Augustin’s main street. Apples are pressed throughout the weekend, and visitors can buy fresh apple juice in two-litre containers. The festival thus combines a specific time to travel with an activity and something to buy. If you would like to travel for the festival, check the exact event dates for your travel year. You can then choose your preferred hotel dates and search for a hotel for those travel dates.
