When planning a hotel stay in Melun, you can organize your itinerary around different themes: historic buildings, museums or routes along the Seine. The city combines these cultural offerings with opportunities for walks, cycling tours and trips on the river.

Melun’s Island and Historic Buildings

Melun developed in a bend of the Seine; the Île Saint-Etienne lies in the center of the city. It is a cultural center with a museum, a university and a media library. The island’s location is therefore part of the city’s layout, while Melun’s historic churches reveal different periods and architectural styles.

The Église Saint-Aspais was designated a historic monument in 1914. It is an outstanding example of late Gothic architecture. Its floor plan, shaped like an irregular trapezoid, is particularly unusual. The Collégiale Notre-Dame has also been designated a historic monument, in 1840. It was founded by King Robert the Pious and built around 1016 to 1031 on the site of an older building. The two churches thus offer different starting points for exploring Melun’s architectural and urban history.

The Prieuré Saint-Sauveur complex includes a church and a crypt, built from the second half of the 10th century onward. The City of Melun uncovered the remains of the church in 1974. It bought the island and restored the complex. Alongside the information about the churches, this offers a longer historical perspective without conflating the different construction periods.

Museums and Visitor Activities

The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Melun explores the history of the city. The Musée de la Gendarmerie nationale presents the history of the institution across two floors of permanent exhibits, including its duties, daily life and resources. The collection includes uniforms, headwear, weapons and paintings. Since March 21, 2011, the museum has held the status of a Musée de France.

For families, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire offers two-hour workshops for children aged six and up on Sundays and during school holidays; family-oriented tours depend on the exhibitions on view. Guided group tours are available in French, English and Italian. As the program may change and the availability of group tours must be confirmed, it is worth checking the latest visitor information before planning your visit.

Garden, Seine and Tours

Le Jardin Botanique covers more than 4,000 m². Its diverse selection of trees and conifers includes copper beeches, plane trees and an Atlantic cedar. A walk in the garden can be continued along the banks of the Seine. This allows you to plan botanical variety and a riverside route as different parts of a stay in Melun.

There is also an activity on the water: Jolly Croisière offers private, customized cruises on the Seine departing from Melun. Private trips from Melun to Bois-le-Roi are offered, lasting from one to six hours. As this service depends on the operator, check current availability in advance.

The Vaux-le-Vélo route takes walkers and cyclists from Melun to the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. It comprises three adapted routes: two cycling routes and one hiking route on the GR 1. The stated distances and times make it easier to compare them: the 9.2 km discovery cycling tour takes 1 hour 15 minutes, while the 8.1 km mountain biking tour takes one hour. The 9 km hike on the GR 1 is listed as taking two hours. This lets you distinguish the three options by activity, distance and time required.
