Guermantes brings together a château steeped in history, a literary connection to Marcel Proust, and paths in the Gondoire Valley. North of the town, the ru de la Gondoire flows along the bottom of a small valley; it is a small tributary of the Marne. Depending on your travel interests, local history, literature or outdoor activities may take centre stage. If you are looking for a hotel in Guermantes, this focus can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

Château de Guermantes and its literary connection to Proust

Château de Guermantes is partially protected as a historic monument. The listings date from 9 August 1944 and 21 December 1970. Its main construction phases span the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The protection dates and construction phases reveal two aspects of its history: its status as a historic monument and its long architectural development.

The château was sold on in 2008 and converted into a conference centre; it is not open to visitors. As access may change, check the current status before your trip.

Literature is also part of the history of the place name. Marcel Proust immortalised Guermantes in the third volume of “À la recherche du temps perdu”, titled “Du côté de Guermantes”. Gallimard published the volume in 1921. Proust also visited Guermantes to thank the château’s owners for allowing him to use the name Guermantes in his literary work. The connection therefore includes both a specific work and a visit by the author.

The Gondoire Valley and walking opportunities

The official “Découverte de la vallée de la Gondoire” route follows the ru de la Gondoire through Chanteloup-en-Brie, Guermantes and Conches-sur-Gondoire. Its route provides a thread through the landscape, focusing on the watercourse and the three towns it passes through.

Le Cairn de Guermantes offers several types of walks: fitness walks, gentle or wellness-focused walks, rambling walks and discovery walks. The Rando méli-mélo includes botanical or culinary walks, as well as classic and sports walks and Nordic walking. At Le Cairn, schedules and participation conditions may change; specific dates for the Rando méli-mélo may also vary. Check the latest information if you plan to take part in either activity.

The Mara-trail de Marne et Gondoire passes through Guermantes every year in early June. The village sets up a refreshment station for runners. The route and organisation may change, so it is advisable to check the event details before your trip. The town also describes numerous footpaths and a Parcours de santé—a fitness and health trail—as opportunities for exercise and sport.

Plan your journey

Bus route 2226, part of the Marne-la-Vallée bus network, serves Guermantes and connects the town with the Bussy-Saint-Georges (RER A) and Lagny-Thorigny (TER P) stations. Check the current timetable and route information before travelling. This will help you coordinate your chosen focus—Château history, literature or walking opportunities—with your journey.
