Churches and architectural history

The Church of Saint-Eloi in Bailly-Carrois is a sandstone church dating from the 13th century. Its elongated floor plan and flat-ended choir are characteristic of its architectural form; the choir end is the end of the choir area. An imposing pulpit dates from 1771, and the church also preserves traces of frescoes depicting standing figures. To understand the church, it helps to distinguish its architectural form from its features: the floor plan and choir end relate to the layout, while the pulpit and fresco traces are surviving details.

The Church of Saint-Denis in Grandpuits was probably built in the 12th century as the chapel of Châteaufort Castle; its southwest tower is one of the few surviving traces of the castle. Here, the historical connection to Châteaufort is the main focus, while the Church of Saint-Eloi is characterized above all by its sandstone, floor plan, and features.

The Ferme de la Salle

The Ferme de la Salle is a 16th-century building that is partially protected as a historic monument. Four corner turrets and a fortified gate give it the appearance of a small rural château.

Among the preserved outbuildings is a dovecote that was probably built in the 15th century. It is cylindrical, has a conical roof, and features two dormer openings for pigeons facing east and south. Ten rows of terracotta nesting holes survive on the second floor. The Ferme dates from the 16th century, while the dovecote probably dates from the 15th century: these two dates refer to different parts of the estate.

Walking trails and cultural program

The Brie-Nangissienne community, to which Grandpuits-Bailly-Carrois belongs, offers around ten signposted walking trails. This number refers to the intermunicipal offering, not to the town alone. Information about the routes is available on the community’s and the French hiking federation’s websites. As route options and online access can change, check the latest information on these websites before planning your trip.

The “Des livres et nous” walking festival includes a book fair in Grandpuits. If you would like to include this cultural program in your travel plans, check the latest dates in advance, as program details may change. Unlike the community-wide walking trails, the book fair is specifically associated with Grandpuits; the two offerings therefore differ in their geographical scope as well.
