Fontenay-Trésigny: Castles, Monuments and Countryside
Accommodation in Fontenay-Trésigny
Fontenay-Trésigny brings together historic buildings, a museum, countryside with forests, open fields and small valleys, as well as an intercommunal swimming pool. When looking for a place to stay, you can choose between culture, countryside and the swimming pool as different priorities. Road and bus information also provides guidance for getting there.
Castle history from the Middle Ages to the 16th century
The Château royal du Vivier was built in the Middle Ages beside a fish-rich pond that gave the castle its name. In the 13th century, it passed into royal ownership after being transferred to Charles de Valois. Its construction and its transfer to royal ownership are two distinct stages in its history. The surviving ruins include a keep, a staircase tower, three round towers and the chapel walls.
Another point of reference in time is the Château du duc d’Epernon in Fontenay-Trésigny: the building dates from the 16th century. If you want to put the town’s history into context, the medieval castle ruins and an early modern building offer distinct themes.
Church, monument and museum
The Église Saint-Martin dates from the 16th century and was fully listed as a historic monument by decree of 18 June 1991. The Fontaine Morin has been protected as a historic monument since the decree of 18 June 1991.
The former public bathhouses now house the Musée Hippolyte Henri. In 2021, they received the Île-de-France region’s “patrimoine d’intérêt régional” label. At this site, the former use as bathhouses meets its present identity as a museum. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current opening hours beforehand.
Countryside and park
The countryside around Fontenay-Trésigny includes extensive forests, open fields and small valleys around the ru de Bréon. A park has been open to the public since July 2023. As access arrangements can change, it is advisable to check the current situation before visiting.
Swimming pool and getting there
