Cravanche brings together the landscape around Salbert and a rich local history. When planning your stay, you can consider whether to focus mainly on views and outdoor activities, or instead on military and municipal history.

Salbert: views and outdoor activities

The summit of Salbert reaches an elevation of 647 m and offers panoramic views over the Territoire de Belfort and Haute-Saône. The views are therefore a concrete point of reference for anyone who also wants to take the landscape into account when choosing a destination. The Parcours de santé du Salbert is a few minutes’ walk from Cravanche, in the forest of Salbert. It offers various exercises in a natural setting.

Another option is the “Le Salbert (Cravanche)” hiking trail. It is 7.8 km long and classified as difficult. The fitness trail and hiking trail therefore offer different ways to be active: various exercises in one case, and a hiking route with a specified length and difficulty in the other. Check current trail conditions before setting out. This lets you take the details of both the fitness trail and the route into account without treating them as the same offering.

Military history at Mont Salbert

Fort Lefevbre is located at an altitude of 650 m on Mont Salbert. It was used to monitor the area around Lure and Giromagny, as well as the railway line from Paris. From 1953, the French Air Force converted it into a secondary radar station. These details give the fort a clear place in the area’s military history: they identify both the area under surveillance and a later use of the structure.

Another military structure on the heights of Salbert is Ouvrage G, which was used during the Cold War. The Association ATOMES secured the structure and opened it for airsoft; activities and rules may change. Direct visit enquiries to ATOMES. Check visiting options directly with the Association in advance before planning a visit.

Maison des Pères and local history

Maison des Pères is now Cravanche’s town hall. It was inaugurated on 1 August 1936. The raised ground floor housed a chapel open to the public, a sacristy and a reception room. This historic arrangement of rooms sits alongside the building’s current municipal function and offers a different perspective on Cravanche’s history from the military structures on Salbert.

Grotte de Cravanche: location and visiting conditions

The Grotte de Cravanche is nearby, but it is in the commune of Belfort, not Cravanche. This distinction is useful when sorting destinations by their commune. During the Neolithic period, the cave was used exclusively as a burial site. It is also designated as a ZNIEFF because it serves as a hibernation site for bats.

Visits are possible only as part of the guided “Tous en visite!” programme from April to October; reservations are required. As seasonal visiting conditions may change, check the programme and confirm your reservation in advance. This keeps the cave’s archaeological history and protected natural significance distinct from the practical arrangements for visiting.

If you would also like to include the cave, bear in mind that it is in the commune of Belfort and can be visited only as part of a guided programme with a reservation.
