Chaussin: Heritage, Cycling Route and Gaudes
Accommodation in Chaussin
Chaussin combines historic traces with cycling and canoe trips, as well as the production of gaudes at Moulin Taron. If you are looking for a hotel in Chaussin, these different themes can help you choose the destination: you can make local history, active excursions or an insight into a traditional product the focus of your stay.
Church, chapel and medieval traces
The Church of Saint-Maurice is mentioned in a document from 1092. The Saint-Nicolas Chapel is the only surviving part of the original church and now serves as a sacristy. The town’s history thus brings together an early written record and a part of the original church building that is still in use today.
The medieval motte is another trace of the former fortifications. The artificially constructed motte was surrounded by its own ditches, and a fortified castle stood on it. Today, the motte and part of the ditches are visible, but the castle itself has not survived. A cemetery site dating from the 5th to the 7th century, exceptional for the region, adds a much earlier period to these historical points of interest.
Cycling route and greenway
A greenway runs through Chaussin. Chaussin is also one of the possible access points to the Voie de la Bresse Jurassienne. The 49.2-kilometre cycle route is classified as easy and follows the track of a former railway. It runs between the Finage plain and the Bresse ponds. This describes both the length of the route and its course through different landscapes. As route details may be updated, it is worth checking the latest route information before setting out.
Canoe trips and natural surroundings
The Canoë-kayak Basse Vallée du Doubs service in Chaussin offers canoe routes from 6 to 52 kilometres for individuals, pairs or groups of four. A canoe route through the Natura 2000 site of the Basse Vallée du Doubs passes through an area home to 170 bird species. The service is seasonal; check availability for your dates before travelling.
The cycling route focuses on a single 49.2-kilometre trail, while the canoe offering covers a range of 6 to 52 kilometres.
Gaudes from Moulin Taron
Moulin Taron produces traditional and organic gaudes from roasted maize flour. The flour is roasted over a wood fire and ground on stone. Moulin Taron describes itself as the last mill in France to produce gaudes by traditional methods. The Boucle 3: Tour de la plaine jurassienne route also recommends stopping at Moulin Taron in Chaussin to discover gaudes.
The shop is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; it is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Guided tours are available by appointment for €3 per person. Opening hours and availability may change, so confirm the details before your visit.
