Discover Saint-Loup-Sur-Semouse
Accommodation in Saint-Loup-Sur-Semouse
Saint-Loup-Sur-Semouse lies on a broad plain at an elevation of about 250 metres, where the Semouse, Augronne and Combeauté rivers meet. The river landscape is one of the town’s distinctive geographical features. To get your bearings, it is helpful to distinguish between the confluences: the Augronne flows into the Semouse upstream of the town centre, while the Combeauté joins it a few kilometres downstream. The three rivers are closely associated with the town, but their tributaries join the Semouse at different points.
Water Landscapes and Nature
Tournant des Îles offers a different perspective on the water, with two bodies of water covering an approximate total area of 25 hectares. This figure refers to both areas combined. Birdlife includes European bee-eaters, swans, coots, great crested grebes and cormorants. Many visitors and walkers come here to relax and unwind; they can also observe abundant flora and fauna. The approximate area gives an idea of the site’s scale, while the named bird species offer specific pointers for nature watching.
At Roupoix, fishing and walking go hand in hand. Carp fishing is available on a catch-and-release basis; people also fish for predators, including pike and zander. The 1.8-kilometre circular trail is accessible to pushchairs and people with reduced mobility. This makes the trail a clearly measured option for a walk, while the fishing opportunities are specified by fish species. Access conditions may change; check them before your visit.
This distinction is useful when choosing between the two nature spots: Tournant des Îles focuses on its bodies of water, birdlife and opportunities to observe flora and fauna; Roupoix is noted for its circular trail and specific types of fishing.
Built Heritage, Furniture History and the Market
The protected features of the Château des Bouly include the façades and roofs, the interior staircase and its railing, and the decorated dining room on the ground floor. The protection was established by decree on 2 March 1979. The listed features thus range from the building’s exterior to specific interior spaces, making the scope of the protection clear.
The Conservatoire de la Cité du Meuble is now housed on the former site of the Usines Réunies; visits are possible by appointment in advance. Here, the history of furniture is linked to a former industrial site. For planning purposes, note the visitor requirement: tours are available by prior appointment only.
The Monday market connects history with life in the town today. The organisation of a market every Monday was confirmed in 1772, 1793 and 1798. Today, the Monday market brings together local producers, craftspeople and traders. It can therefore be understood both through its historic tradition and through the different groups who gather there.
Mountain Biking
For mountain biking enthusiasts, the “Circuit VTT – Du Planey à l'Hermitage” is another named option. It starts in Saint-Loup-Sur-Semouse, crosses the Vôge area and passes at the foot of the mysterious Gouffre de la source du Planey, with its turquoise water. The described route thus includes its starting point, a section through the Vôge area and the distinctive spring chasm. This route offers a different focus from the walking and nature-watching spots: it is described as a mountain-bike circuit.
