Fresne-Saint-Mamès combines the landscape around Le Mont with a rich local history. For visitors looking for a destination where nature and cultural heritage both play a part, there are several points of interest: a botanical trail, protected natural areas and notable landmarks around Saint-Léger Church.

Landscapes and trails around Le Mont

Le Mont lies on the western side of the municipal area. The landscape there consists mostly of steep, scrub-covered meadows known as dry grasslands. The underlying ground is made up of limestone and marl limestone, with rocks appearing in places. At least seven orchid species have been observed on Le Mont. These details give the area a distinctive botanical character without reducing its landscape to individual plants.

The Sentier botanique du Mont explores the local flora with themed panels about the area’s plant life. A hut along the trail provides a place to stop for a picnic. From there, the view takes in Fresne in the foreground and the Monts de Gy in the background. The trail thus offers both local flora and scenery: the panels focus on one topic, while the view places the village within a wider landscape.

Cycling enthusiasts can also enjoy a nature experience: cycle loop No. 16, “Les Tilleuls,” passes through protected natural areas. Notable trees along the route include plane trees, a lime tree and a Lebanon cedar. The nature experiences described here are distinct: the botanical trail focuses on local flora and offers a view from the hut, while the cycle loop is characterised by protected areas and remarkable trees.

Saint-Léger Church and local history

Saint-Léger Church brings together several historical periods. The choir and transept are considered its oldest parts; they appear to date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The church is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Inside, there is also the sculptural group “Vierge de Pitié,” dated to the 15th and 16th centuries. The tentative dating of the oldest part of the building and the dating of the sculptural group point to different periods in the church’s history.

The history of a priory that has since disappeared is also part of the village’s history. It was founded in the 15th century by the Lords of Grandson. This priory makes Fresne-Saint-Mamès part of the European network of Chaise-Dieu (Casa Dei) sites of the Casadean order. There is also a lime tree in front of the church, said to date from 1340. The church, the priory and the lime tree offer different ways to explore the village’s history: through architectural history, religious connections and a traditional dating.

Another example of rural cultural heritage is the Fontaine-Lavoir-Abreuvoir. It was restored with support from the Haute-Saône Department as part of the restoration of local rural heritage.

Leisure activities in the village

The leisure complex in Fresne-Saint-Mamès includes two tennis courts, a volleyball court, a floodlit boules court, a mini-golf course, children’s play equipment, a bowling game, a table-tennis table, giant chess, a roller-skating rink and a climbing wall. The facilities range from sports courts and games to various leisure activities. Together with the area’s nature and cultural attractions, they provide a broad picture of the village to help you choose your destination.
