Abelcourt can be considered for your trip in terms of two distinct interests: hiking along a route that passes through several communes and historic buildings in the village. The Sentier de randonnée du Moulin des Oiseaux runs through Villers-les-Luxeuil, Abelcourt, Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux, Breuches, Briaucourt and Velorcey. The church, Place St-Pierre and Fontaine Place de l’Ancienne Mairie also offer specific points of reference for exploring the village’s history. This can help you decide whether the walking trail or the architectural heritage better suits your travel plans.

Hiking the Sentier de randonnée du Moulin des Oiseaux

The trail is hilly, two-thirds of it runs through woodland, and it has no major difficulties. These features answer different questions when choosing a hike: the terrain describes the route’s profile, the proportion of woodland describes the surroundings, and the difficulty is another characteristic of the trail. If you choose a route based on its terrain and landscape, you can consider these details together. This gives you a clearer picture of the hike than the route name alone.

The point of return is also important for understanding the route’s geography: after passing through the communes mentioned above, the trail leads back to Villers-les-Luxeuil. Abelcourt is therefore part of a route through several places, but it is not the return point. This distinction helps you understand Abelcourt’s role along the route without confusing the commune with the hike’s endpoint.

Church and historic squares

Abelcourt’s church was built in 1847–1848 and has a pink sandstone façade. The date and material provide two different points of reference: the years place the building in the mid-19th century, while the pink sandstone is a specific feature of the façade. If you are interested in architectural history, you can take note of both when it was built and the material used.

Two further points in time come together at Place St-Pierre. The square was once the centre of Abelcourt; it is home to a 19th-century fountain and a 16th-century calvary. The square thus combines its former role in the village with structures from different centuries. The difference in age is a point of reference in its own right: the calvary and fountain do not date from the same period, but represent the 16th and 19th centuries respectively.

The Fontaine Place de l’Ancienne Mairie retains its pavilion and the concrete basins of the washhouse and rinsing basin. It is no longer supplied with water. The two fountains highlight different aspects: for the fountain on Place St-Pierre, the 19th century is a point of reference; at Place de l’Ancienne Mairie, the focus is on the surviving structures and the lack of a water supply. As the condition of the structures may change, it is worth checking their current state before your visit.
