Ludes brings together several themes for a stay: the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, insights at Champagne houses, and the work of winemakers. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the different focuses: church architecture and local history, cellars and production, tastings, or vineyard work. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

The Church and Winemakers’ Work Throughout the Year

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the oldest surviving testament to Ludes. Its original section is Romanesque. The architectural connection therefore lies specifically in the original section, while the church as a whole is considered the oldest surviving testament to the village. Those interested in Romanesque architecture will find a clearly defined historical focus here.

The Sentiers de Ludes offer another connection to winemaking. At their inauguration in 2016, an illustrated walk with twelve panels was offered, covering the work of winemakers throughout the year. Unlike an insight into a single stage of production, this walk at the time focused on the work involved over the course of the winemaking year. In Ludes, a connection to architectural history thus sits alongside a historical perspective on the seasonal tasks of winemakers.

Cellars, Production, and Tastings

At Champagne Quatresols-Gauthier, tours include the press, the winery, and the typically Champagne chalk cellar. Visits are by reservation and end with a complimentary tasting of various cuvées. The offering thus combines insights into several areas of the operation with a tasting at the end of the visit.

At Champagne Forget-Chauvet, the entire production process takes center stage: visitors learn about every step from pressing to labeling. The visit ends with a tasting of three cuvées. Visitors can also go into the vineyards to better understand the work carried out there throughout the year. This vineyard activity is preferably offered by reservation.

Visitors will find a different focus at Canard-Duchêne: the historic cellars host the immersive escape game “L’Énigme des Caves.” In suitable weather conditions, the visit also includes a guided tour of the vineyards. Here, a playful experience in the cellars sits alongside a guided look at the vineyards, weather permitting.

The history of a Champagne producer is another local point of interest: Champagne Gaidoz-Forget was founded in Ludes in 1930. This founding adds a historical connection to Champagne production to the specific visitor experiences on offer.

Plan Visits Around Your Interests

The vineyard offerings have different conditions to consider when planning: visits at Quatresols-Gauthier are by reservation; a reservation is preferred for the vineyard visit at Forget-Chauvet, while the vineyard tour at Canard-DuchĂŞne depends on suitable weather conditions. Take these differences into account when weighing up visits. The themes range from Romanesque architecture and the Champagne production process to tastings, winemaking, and an escape game.
