Le Breuil can be assessed for trip planning based on three specific themes: hiking trails in the Vallée du Surmelin, the Église Saint-Martin du Breuil, and the Champagne Moutardier winery. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Le Breuil, you can weigh these highlights according to whether a particular hiking duration, church architecture, or a visit to the winery matters to you. The hikes described differ in length and time required.

Hiking in the Vallée du Surmelin

The hiking trail network in the Vallée du Surmelin connects Montmort-Lucy with Le Breuil on the Marne side; on the Aisne side, the route runs from Le Breuil to Mézy-Moulins. Le Breuil is therefore a named place on both of the route sections described. For specific tour planning, you can distinguish these connections from the individual hikes and first choose between a loop and a longer hike.

The “La Fontaine Noire” loop runs between Baulne-en-Brie and Le Breuil and is one of the eleven short circular trails in the Vallée du Surmelin. It is 6.82 kilometers long; the stated duration is about two hours and five minutes. Along the way, the route follows the Surmelin through meadows. A shaded picnic table is also part of the route described. Its length, approximate walking time, and scenery give you specific points of reference when deciding how to fit a shorter loop into your day.

The “Balade sur les chemins du Breuil” hike is 9.2 kilometers long, takes about three hours, and is rated very easy. It starts at Place Bastidon. First, it follows the Chemin de la Prairie along the Surmelin through meadows; the route also offers views of Le Breuil and the Surmelin Valley. Compared with the shorter loop, both the longer distance and the starting point are explicitly stated here. The duration remains an approximate estimate, while the very easy rating applies to this hike.

Église Saint-Martin du Breuil

The Église Saint-Martin du Breuil has partly Romanesque and Gothic features. Its exterior features include a tall square tower and a slate roof. Inside are 16th-century stained-glass windows, a pulpit in the style of Louis XV, and four paintings. The backs of the choir stalls are also noteworthy: they bear carved portraits from the early Renaissance. The church thus brings together a range of architectural and artistic details, from the tower and windows to the carvings.

The church was listed as a historic monument by decree dated January 10, 1986. If you are primarily interested in seeing the windows, pulpit, paintings, or choir stalls, bear in mind that access to the interior may vary, and check before your visit.

Visit Champagne Moutardier
