Chouilly brings together vineyard landscapes, hiking trails and a wetland shaped by themes of winemaking and local history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Chouilly, these different features can help you get a sense of the area for your stay. The vineyards, the Jardin Humide and Saint-Martin Church each offer something distinct: from wide valley views and nature observation to architectural history.

Vineyards and Trails

Chouilly’s vineyard covers 500 hectares, stretches down the slopes and offers numerous viewpoints overlooking the Côte des Blancs. The Boucle de Chouilly (A) passes through the communal vineyard to the Butte de Saran. From there, the view extends across the entire valley, particularly toward the Montagne de Reims opposite and the plain to the east. The route therefore focuses on its path through the vineyard and the views from the Butte.

The PR126 Circuit de Chouilly à Saran is 11.2 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes. It starts at the Jardin Humide, passes through Chouilly on trails through the vineyards toward the Butte de Saran, and goes by Saint-Martin Church. The loop returns to the Jardin Humide via a bridge over the Tarnauds River. Its route thus combines vineyard trails, a local landmark and a river crossing. The PR 118 and PR 126 hiking trails can also be accessed from the Jardin Humide. Check the route details and trail layout before setting out; the signage and route should also be checked again.

Wetlands and Winemaking Explained

The Jardin Humide is a 3.5-hectare public wetland park in Chouilly. A wooden boardwalk can be used on foot or by bicycle; there is also a viewpoint and picnic spots along the riverbank. The educational trail covers the wetland’s fauna and flora. Topics presented include birds and the principle behind pike spawning grounds. Alongside a route through the landscape, the park also offers a way to learn about the wetland’s habitats and natural processes.

The Jardin de vignes focuses on a different subject: Champagne winemaking. The open-air museum presents vine-training methods and approved pruning techniques. Fully grown vines and educational panels explain the topics; the garden also includes a miniature Champagne vineyard and lime-loving plants. Visitors can explore different aspects of winemaking side by side: practical vine care, its presentation in miniature and the plants associated with this place.

The Architectural History of Saint-Martin

Saint-Martin Church is the surviving chapel of the former castle of Chouilly. The Romanesque building dates from the 11th century and was extended in the Gothic style in the 15th century. These two building phases give the church a clear historical context: the Romanesque structure was followed several centuries later by the Gothic extension. The church’s connection to the former castle is also of interest on a walk focused on local history; the PR126 passes right by it.
