Ardennes: Trails, Nature and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Ardennes
Between deep forests, rocky ridges and a 110-kilometre waterway, the Ardennes reveal several sides of a trip. The Parc naturel régional des Ardennes offers marked trails and mountain-bike circuits; there is also a link to EuroVelo 19 and cultural sites with very different forms. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: nature trails, the Voie Verte or architectural heritage each offer a different experience.
Landscapes and protected habitats
The Ardennes landscape includes bocage, lakes, wooded hills and open plains. The designated natural areas are equally varied, ranging from dry, calcareous grasslands to peat bogs and ravine forests. Pelouses, rochers et buxaie de la Pointe de Givet is a 673-hectare Zone spéciale de conservation focused on dry calcareous grasslands. The Vallée boisée de la Houille covers 237 hectares and is designated as a Zone spéciale de conservation for ravine forest. Tourbières du plateau ardennais is a 361-hectare Zone spéciale de conservation focused on peat bogs. Nine bat species find shelter in the old mines and underground passages of the Ardoisières de Monthermé et de Deville. The Plateau Ardennais is a 75,665-hectare Zone de Protection Spéciale, designated for birds. Taken together, the natural features range from open calcareous grasslands and wooded ravines to peat bogs, bat roosts and bird habitats.
Hiking trails, rocky vistas and cycling routes
The Parc naturel régional des Ardennes has 1,200 kilometres of marked trails through deep forests, with panoramic views over the Meuse, across rocky ridges and through picturesque villages. The classified site of Roc la Tour adds quartzite pillars and a panorama over the Semoy Valley to these landscape highlights. There are also 22 marked mountain-bike circuits totalling more than 400 kilometres. They are divided into four difficulty levels. The marked trails and mountain-bike circuits therefore offer different types of routes; the mountain-bike routes are also classified by difficulty. Seasonal operation may apply to the mountain-bike circuits. Check conditions for your travel dates before planning your trip.
Another route idea is the Voie Verte Sud-Ardennes. It runs for 110 kilometres alongside the water, follows the Canal des Ardennes and is intended for walking, cycling, horse riding and scooters. At Pont-à -Bar, it connects to EuroVelo 19, La Meuse à vélo. You can reach the Parc naturel régional des Ardennes from Paris by train in less than two hours; travelling by bus, carpooling, bicycle or on foot are also possible options. Check timetables and local route conditions before your trip.
Architectural heritage and stories
In the historic centre of Charleville-Mézières is the Place Ducale, which was classified as a historic monument in 1946. Built between 1606 and 1624, it combines yellow stone, blue slate and red brick. Rocroi is one of the few European towns whose star-shaped layout has been fully preserved. The Église Saint-Didier d’Asfeld is also notable for its unusual structure: it is shaped like a viola. Les Rochers des Quatre Fils Aymon lead from architecture to legend; the rocks are associated with the medieval epic of the four sons of Aymon. The layout of the square, the town’s design, church architecture and storytelling traditions each offer a different perspective on the culture of the Ardennes.
In the wider Sud-Ardennes area, regional products include beers, champagne, charcuterie, cheese, honey, farm-made ice cream, meat and wines.
