Gardens and Architectural History

Château de Fontpertuis is surrounded by moats and includes, among other features, a dovecote, an orangery, a greenhouse and a kennel. A new main building for Château de Fontpertuis was built in 1858 by the family of the Dukes of Lorge, replacing the earlier building. The outbuildings were built around 1890 by the Orléans architect Pagot and contractors Guilletdoux and Gervaise. Just over three decades separate the construction of the new main building from that of the outbuildings.

The Jardins de la Régie cover 10,000 m² and feature a richly varied plant life. One distinctive feature is the Aucuba collection, recognized by the Conservatoire des Collections Végétales Spécialisées. The gardens’ size and recognized Aucuba collection describe two different aspects: their spatial extent and a specialized plant collection. The Château represents architectural history; the Jardins de la Régie, plant life and the Aucuba collection.

You can visit the Jardins without a reservation on self-guided tours during the Rendez-vous aux jardins weekend, on the following Saturday, every Friday afternoon in June, and during the Journées du patrimoine weekend.

For planning your trip, the gardens and the path differ mainly in their timing. For the Jardins de la Régie, the specified visiting times are key, so check the exact dates against your stay. For the path on the edge of the Sologne, the approximate duration is a useful guide to planning your day.

Path and Landscape

The path on the edge of the Sologne is 9 km long, takes about 3 hours and is rated easy. The distance and estimated time complement each other: 9 km describes the route, while around three hours gives you an approximate timeframe. The path runs alongside fields and woodland edges, passes through the forest and then returns to open countryside; it also offers a beautiful view of the Sologne landscape.
