Artenay is located in the Beauce, a landscape shaped by agriculture, whose local character also includes a sugar factory. Cultural sites here tell different stories: from travelling theatre and regional archaeology to milling technology. There are also temporary exhibitions, a mobile cinema and a weekly market. When planning your trip, it is worth checking the dates and booking conditions for each attraction.

Travelling theatre and history at the Musée du Théâtre Forain

The Musée du Théâtre Forain is housed in the former Ferme du Paradis in the town centre. The building is typical of the Beauce’s agricultural architecture. The museum traces four centuries of travelling theatre history, including Molière, commedia dell’arte and portable theatres that once travelled through rural areas of France. In the courtyard, you can also see a restored former caravan used as accommodation by travelling actors.

The museum’s former sheepfold houses archaeological and palaeontological galleries. They present the history of the Beauce and the canton of Artenay from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The galleries can only be visited by prior reservation. Arrange your booking before your trip.

The mill, agriculture and rural technology

The Moulin de pierre d’Artenay combines a present-day offering with a clear history of its technology. It was built in 1849 with three sets of millstones and the innovative Système Berton of the time. It still mills wheat using traditional methods and offers tours and demonstrations; check the visitor arrangements with the mill in advance. The mill’s historic structure and the milling process itself are both central to a visit.

A collection of restored old agricultural machinery offers another perspective on farming. It is located on a nearby farm associated with the mill. The sugar factory, the town’s agricultural character and this machinery give the Beauce a different focus from its theatre and museum history. Walking and cycling are also possible leisure activities in Artenay; specific route details are not available.

The Prison d’étape and Église Saint-Victor

The Prison d’étape hosts exhibitions and cultural events. Individual and group visits can be arranged by calling the town hall in advance. Exhibitions change, so it is advisable to ask about the current programme before travelling. The building’s historic character includes preserved oak planks and interior shutters in the cell walls, as well as numerous graffiti left by former prisoners.

The Stations of the Cross in the Église Saint-Victor d’Artenay consist of 14 framed 19th-century oil paintings by André Joseph BODEM (1791–1831). A state protection order dated 16 December 2021 lists the 14 stations as movable objects under heritage protection. The number of stations, their artistic execution and their protected status provide a specific point of reference for art history.

Market and mobile cinema

The weekly market takes place on Thursday mornings in the square in front of the town hall. As market times can change, check the date before your trip. The Cinémobile also follows a changing screening schedule: its 100-seat mobile cinema is set up on some Sundays in the Place de l’Eglise in Artenay. Ciclic publishes the programme and screening dates monthly on the relevant page. Check the current programme in advance if you are planning a cinema visit.

Getting there and planning

Artenay can be reached by car via the A10 and D2020. When planning your visit around a particular theme, you can choose between different focuses: the Musée du Théâtre Forain explores theatre history, while the mill and agricultural machinery collection showcase the farming side of the Beauce. Galleries, tours and events each have their own conditions or dates; checking these in advance will help you tailor your choices to your trip.
