Veilleins: Nature Trails and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Veilleins
Veilleins offers two distinct highlights for a stay: trails through natural landscapes and ponds, and buildings with a long local history. The Circuit de Monthault and the Circuit de l’Ardrelle offer different ways to explore the landscape; the church and half-timbered architecture are part of the village’s history.
Hiking and Bridleway Routes
Two activities are listed under the name Circuit de Monthault: the 17-kilometre hiking trail starts in Veilleins, while the 17-kilometre bridleway is listed as starting at Veilleins’ municipal pond. The starting point therefore depends on the activity you choose. The municipal pond has toilets and a picnic area; fishing is also possible there.
The Circuit de Monthault lies within the Sologne Natura 2000 Special Protection Area. The bridleway passes through woodland and agricultural plains, along bright open paths and beside several ponds. Pollarded willows provide living refuges for numerous animal species. The protected-area designation defines the wider setting, while the pollarded willows provide concrete refuges for numerous animal species.
The Circuit de l’Ardrelle is a shorter, family-oriented hiking alternative to the Circuit de Monthault in the Sologne des étangs. It passes through forests, woodland, plains and pond landscapes in a natural environment protected by Natura 2000. Ponds feature in both landscapes; the Circuit de l’Ardrelle also passes through forests, while the Circuit de Monthault bridleway includes bright open paths and agricultural plains.
Church and Traditional Architecture
The Church of Saint-Martin was rebuilt in the early 12th century by canons from the Priory of Saint-Cosme. The route into the church leads through the cemetery, where a stone base dating from the late 15th century supports the cemetery cross. The rebuilding of the church and the later-dated base mark two distinct historical periods.
In the village centre is La Forge, a half-timbered building characteristic of traditional Sologne architecture. Its restoration used historic building materials such as wood, earth and brick; the small stained-glass windows were preserved. The former Auberge La Forge is listed as a historic monument. Also in the village centre is the Locature in La Pilaterie. Saint-Martin and La Forge represent different cultural and historical themes: the rebuilding of a church on the one hand, and half-timbered construction, restoration and its former use as an inn on the other.

Comparing the route lengths can help you choose: the Circuit de Monthault hiking trail and bridleway are both 17 kilometres long, while the Circuit de l’Ardrelle is the shorter hiking alternative. The starting points also differ: the hiking trail begins in Veilleins, while the bridleway starts at the municipal pond. If you are more interested in local history, you can consider Saint-Martin and La Forge as cultural landmarks.
