Thenay: Wine Country, Stained Glass and History
Accommodation in Thenay
Thenay as a Destination
Thenay combines a long local history with outdoor activities and a connection to winegrowing. You can plan your stay around these different highlights: the church focuses on historic building phases and its altarpiece; the Étang du Roger offers relaxation and fishing; and a circular walking route explores the landscapes south of the village. AB Vitrail Artisanal also offers visits by appointment and introductory courses. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the things that genuinely interest you.
The Church and Local History
The area’s history goes back a long way: before the French Revolution, the parish of Thenay was under the rule of the Grand’Maison. Thenay’s church also brings together several historical periods. Its origins date back to the 12th century, and it was partially rebuilt in the 19th century. The church’s altarpiece is considered one of the finest in the Cher Valley and Romorantinais area. The time span makes the church an anchor for local history: its origins date to the Middle Ages, while the partial rebuilding belongs to a much later period. Alongside this architectural history, the altarpiece provides its own focus on art history.
Winegrowing in the Touraine-Oisly Region
Winegrowing also has a clear regional connection to Thenay. The Touraine-Oisly appellation’s wine-growing area extends across five communes, with Thenay as its westernmost. Sauvignon Blanc plays a particularly important role in the appellation’s vineyards. The area’s regional reach is useful to keep in mind: the connection to wine extends beyond Thenay, while the village marks the western part of this area.
By the Water and on Foot
The Étang du Roger is a landscaped five-hectare pond, ideal for relaxing and fishing. If you plan to fish there, check the local rules beforehand. An 8 km circular walking route starts at the Étang municipal du Roger in Thenay. It heads south of Thenay through flat terrain, with wooded and open landscapes as well as areas suited to vegetable and winegrowing. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions. The options are clear: the pond is for relaxation or fishing, while the circular route passes through a variety of landscapes.
