Lavardin: History and Landscapes along the Loir
Accommodation in Lavardin
A stay in Lavardin centres on its architectural and village history, as well as a landscape of steep slopes and caves along the Loir. Cycling adds to these themes, with a route on the Way of St James and a named cycling circuit.
Architectural History and Heritage
The remains of the Château de Lavardin were protected as a Monument historique by decree on 21 November 1945. Lavardin is also the only “Plus Beau Village de France” in the Loir-et-Cher département. The village’s history also includes the Pont de Lavardin: the village can be reached via the Gothic bridge spanning the Loir. It was built in the late 12th or early 13th century. The Château’s protected status and the bridge’s construction date provide two different points of reference for the village’s heritage.
Another span of time is reflected in the Église Saint-Genest. Construction began in 1040 and continued for nearly two centuries. The church houses remarkable 12th-century frescoes, which were covered over during the Renaissance and rediscovered around 1900. The church’s long construction history and the later history of its wall paintings thus sit side by side: the frescoes tell their own story of creation, concealment and rediscovery.
The Musée de Lavardin offers an insight into the heritage associated with the Château and lets visitors discover part of the village’s history. To explore the village, the tourist office offers the free Wivisites app. An audio version makes the content more accessible to visitors with visual impairments. As app features may change, check them before use.
Slopes, forest and caves along the Loir
The ZNIEFF “Coteau de Lavardin et Ravine des Reclusages” includes a very steep slope downstream from Lavardin, overlooking the Loir valley. The slopes consist of tuffeau limestone and are mostly covered by sessile oak forest. In cooler areas, there are local patches dominated by beech. The geology, predominant tree cover and local beech stands distinguish the landscape within this hillside area.
The caves are also part of this natural area: they provide a favoured hibernation site for nine bat species. The ZNIEFF’s natural landscape thus brings together several elements: the steep slopes above the valley, the forest’s composition and the caves as winter quarters. If you are interested in nature, this focus on habitats and species offers a different perspective from Lavardin’s architecture and history.
Explore Lavardin by bike
Lavardin lies on the cycling route of the Way of St James. Another named ride is the “De Lavardin à Sasnières par les troglos” cycling circuit, which runs from Lavardin to the Jardin Remarquable du Plessis Sasnières. When planning, you can distinguish between the two route options depending on whether you would like to follow a cycling route on the Way of St James or choose the named circuit with its specified endpoints. Route details may change, so check the current description before setting out.
When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up the village’s different attractions: the bridge, Château, church and museum offer different ways to discover the village’s history, while the slopes and caves bring the landscape and wildlife to the fore. The cycling route on the Way of St James and the cycling circuit add an activity to these options; the precise route depends on the latest details.
