Huisseau-Sur-Cosson: Oaks, Church and Château
Accommodation in Huisseau-Sur-Cosson
If you are looking for a hotel in Huisseau-Sur-Cosson, culture, woodland and marked trails can be the focus of your stay. Its architectural heritage includes the Église Saint Étienne et Saint My and the Château des Grotteaux; the oaks known as Les chênes jumeaux are in the Boulogne state forest. There are also three marked hiking and walking trails. When planning your trip, you can decide whether architecture, a château visit, or nature and outdoor activity should take priority.
Church and Château History
The Église Saint Étienne et Saint My was built in two periods: the central section dates from the late 12th century, and the side aisle from the 16th century. The two parts thus give the church two distinct points of reference in time. The church also has a wooden Caquetoir. This type of gallery is common in Sologne and Berry. Anyone interested in architectural forms will find both different periods of construction and a regional architectural feature here.
The Château des Grotteaux was built in 1620 by Guillaume Ribier on older foundations. It has been listed in the register of historic monuments since 1954, and its park since 1997. The construction date and listing dates refer to different aspects of its history: 1620 marks the building of the château, while 1954 and 1997 mark the separate heritage listings for the Château and its park.
Guided Tour and Wine Tasting
A guided tour of the Château des Grotteaux includes the listed park, the fully furnished château and secret passageways. Every Wednesday, a wine tasting is also held in the medieval cellars, featuring local Loire wines from older vintages and regional specialities. Check the dates for the tour and tasting before your trip.
Les chênes jumeaux and the Forest Trails
Les chênes jumeaux are in the Boulogne state forest in Huisseau-Sur-Cosson. Each oak is 32 metres tall and 110 centimetres in diameter; they are approximately 350 years old. To reach them, at the edge of Huisseau-Sur-Cosson, head towards Mont-près-Chambord and follow Rue de la Charmoise to the entrance of the Boulogne forest, near the forester’s hut. Then walk about 400 metres and turn left at the sign for the oaks. Check the local signs when you arrive.
There are three marked hiking and walking trails in Huisseau-Sur-Cosson. They were created by the Communauté de communes du Pays de Chambord and the municipality, with support from the Comité départemental de la randonnée pédestre. The circular route to the Château de Saumery in Huisseau-Sur-Cosson is marked by FFRandonnée 41.
The details to bear in mind when planning your day differ: the tasting takes place on Wednesdays, reaching the oaks involves walking about 400 metres from the forest entrance, and the church and Château are notable for their construction phases and historical dates. You can therefore make a set appointment, access to the oaks or architectural history the focus of your visit.
