Orsennes: Historic Buildings, Walks and a Pond Landscape
Accommodation in Orsennes
Orsennes appeals to travellers interested in historic buildings, walks and seasonal fishing. For planning, these features can be considered separately: the trails offer a choice of length, duration and difficulty, while fishing at Etang communal du Rigollet is limited to a specified period. This makes it easy to plan activities and timings to suit your needs.
Historic Buildings and Monuments
The Eglise du prieuré Saint-Martin has been listed as a historic monument since 21 October 1925. Its main construction phases date from the 12th and 15th centuries. The listing date and the construction phases refer to different points in time: 1925 marks its protected status, while the centuries refer to the building’s main phases.
The Château du Breuil Yvain dates back to 1236. Parts of its double moats remain, and it is possible to walk along the former moats. Please take local access conditions into account. The Dolmen du Chardy is a historic monument measuring 3.5 metres in length. These sites therefore offer different points of interest: the church’s construction phases, the château’s origins and moats, and the dolmen’s specific length.
Walks by Duration and Difficulty
The Circuit pédestre des étangs is a 7.6-kilometre walking trail around Orsennes. It is rated very easy and takes 1 hour and 55 minutes. The route goes from pond to pond, passing oak trees, chestnut trees, fountains and wash houses; this type of walk is considered typical of the Marche Berrichonne.
By contrast, the Circuit pédestre du château du Breuil-Yvain is 15.4 kilometres long, rated difficult and takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. The second route is therefore considerably longer and has a higher difficulty rating than the Circuit des étangs. There is also a clear difference in the time required: 3 hours and 45 minutes compared with 1 hour and 55 minutes. Distance, duration and difficulty rating each answer a different planning question. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Fishing and the Pond Landscape
Etang communal du Rigollet is located near the centre of Orsennes and covers around one hectare. Fishing for carp and white fish is open there from 1 April to 31 October. If fishing is your main focus, plan this activity within that period. There is also a fitness trail and picnic tables by the pond; the dates given apply to fishing.
The Circuit des chemins gallo-romains offers a preserved bocage landscape in Orsennes, with ponds, hedgerows and vineyard huts. Compared with the Circuit pédestre des étangs, the landscape has a different emphasis here: bocage, hedgerows and vineyard huts take centre stage, while the Etangs route goes from pond to pond and passes oak trees, chestnut trees, fountains and wash houses. If you also choose walks based on the scenery, this difference offers another concrete point of comparison alongside distance and duration.
