Mézières-en-Brenne: History and Paths by the Water
Accommodation in Mézières-en-Brenne
In Mézières-en-Brenne, local history and landscape offer two distinct focal points for a stay. The Collégiale Sainte Marie-Madeleine and the remains of a historic castle invite you to explore the town’s past. Walking paths also pass former homes or lead into waterside landscapes. You can shape your stay around historic buildings, walks or more active pursuits.
History and Historic Traces
For more than three centuries, Mézières-en-Brenne was the country residence of the Lords of Brenne. The Collégiale Sainte Marie-Madeleine was founded by Alix of Brabant and consecrated in 1339. Its stained-glass windows, dating from the 14th and 16th centuries, depict the family histories of numerous lords who ruled over Brenne.
Only two towers and an old dovecote remain of the town’s original feudal castle. Classified remains of a 15th-century castle lie very close to the Claise diversion canal.
La Boutique du Moulin also offers a glimpse of local crafts, showcasing original works by around ten craft artists. There is also a space for temporary exhibitions. The participating artists and exhibition program may change. If you have a particular exhibition in mind, it is best to check the current program in advance.
Exploring on Foot
The Circuit des cartes postales is a 3.6-kilometer walking route marked by 39 old postcards. It passes former medieval homes that bear witness to the town’s great age. The route length gives you a concrete measure for planning, while the postcards and homes lend the walk a cultural and historical dimension.
The waterside paths and landscapes offer different points of interest, too. Les bords de Claise No. 42 is a waterside walking route through a green landscape designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible. Les prés du canal is a wetland between the Claise and its diversion channel. It includes various wooded areas and wet habitats such as ponds, fish spawning grounds and ditches. Shaded paths run beneath trees close to the water. While Les bords de Claise No. 42 highlights a walking route in a green setting, Les prés du canal focuses on wooded areas and wet habitats. Route details may change; check them before planning your visit.
