Saint-Étienne-de-Chigny combines historic buildings, Loire landscapes and experiences that depend on the season or a scheduled event. If you are looking for a hotel in this destination, you can plan your stay around whether heritage, nature or a specific offering is your main focus.

Heritage: Churches, Manor House and Mill

The Church of Saint-Étienne was classified as a historic monument by decree on 21 July 1942. It contains a 16th-century stained-glass window depicting the Crucifixion, in which Jean Binet and his wife are portrayed. Another stop in the history of the churches is the church in Vieux Bourg: it was rebuilt at Jean Binet’s request between 1542 and 1543. These two details relate to different aspects of the buildings’ history—the classification and window of the Church of Saint-Étienne, and the rebuilding of the church in Vieux Bourg.

The Manoir d’Andigny has been known since the 12th century and is partially protected as a historic monument. The protected features are the manor house’s façades and roofs, two monumental stone fireplaces, and the façade of its troglodytic chapel. The estate includes a collection of small historic ironwork items dating from the 12th to the 18th century. It can be visited during opening hours, so plan your visit around the relevant opening times.

On the western plateau of the municipality stands the Moulin du « Pot au Beurre », dating from 1789. Above its entrance, a house is depicted with a cross above it, alongside a monstrance. This design could suggest that the mill ground wheat to make communion wafers; this interpretation is explicitly only a possible explanation. At Pont de Bresme, restored houses that are partly built into the rock are home to several artists. Together, these buildings, the artistic motif and the inhabited houses represent different facets of the area’s cultural history.

Loire Landscapes and Outdoor Activities

The listed Vallée de la Bresme area includes Saint-Étienne-de-Chigny and covers 1,996 hectares. Île Buda, where the Besme flows into the Loire, is home to flora and fauna typical of the Loire. The Parc des Grillets and the Théâtre de verdure also have this characteristic. These places offer different perspectives on the landscape: the river’s confluence on the island, and green spaces within the municipality.

The Parc des Grillets covers 25 hectares and offers shaded walking paths as well as opportunities for orienteering, Nordic walking, archery and a fitness trail. Alongside walking, there are several specific activities to choose from. As the activities available there may change, check the latest information about the park before your visit if you have a particular activity in mind.

The Théâtre de verdure was created on the site of a former clay quarry and offers a programme of performances during the season. Its purpose therefore differs from a walk or sporting activity in the park: here, the seasonal programme is key. Check the event dates if you would like to plan your visit around a performance.

Excursions and Scheduled Experiences

The Les Bateliers de Saint-Étienne-de-Chigny association has been based at a former boatmen’s stop since 1993, with its traditional boats. Since 2022, in cooperation with the Tours-Val de Loire tourist office, it has offered more regular educational excursions on the Loire. Schedules may vary; if a trip is important to your travel plans, check the latest dates in advance.

Another specific option is a wine-tasting introduction at Château de Beauvois. It is available by reservation only and includes a visit to the troglodytic cellar, a tasting of three wines—two local selections and one from the owner—and a platter of cold cuts and cheeses. As availability may change, confirm the details in advance. The differences matter when planning your time: for excursions, check the current schedule; for the Théâtre de verdure, the season; and for the introduction, a reservation.
