Luynes can be explored through several distinct highlights: the designated landscape along the Loire, the architectural history of the Château de Luynes, a historic market hall and routes requiring very different amounts of time. Other themes include traditional Loire boats, fossils and an aquatic complex. When looking for a hotel, it may therefore help to first consider whether you would like to include architecture, a walk, or water and nature themes in your trip.

Landscape and château views

The designated area of Luynes preserves a natural setting among farmland, forests and the Loire. The hillsides and opposite bank offer unobstructed views of the Château de Luynes. The landscape and château thus form a shared perspective on the town. It is also important to bear in mind when planning your visit that the Château de Luynes is not open to visitors. If access affects your travel plans, check the information again in advance.

Comparing architectural history

The Château de Luynes’ main construction phases date from the 13th, 15th and 17th centuries. The château is listed as a Monument historique; it was listed by decree of 17 July 1926. The Vieille halle presents a different type of construction: it is a 15th-century building made entirely of timber, with three unequal naves. Comparing the two structures therefore highlights different architectural features: for the château, the main construction phases spanning several centuries; for the hall, its timber construction and unequal naves.

Two routes, two time budgets

Luynes offers a short waymarked walk and a considerably longer hike. The Promenade des panneaux émaillés runs from the “general history” sign to the “château” sign and takes about 20 minutes. The Aqueduc circular hiking route is 14 km long, has a moderate difficulty level and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. This gives you two very different time budgets to choose between; the Aqueduc route also has a stated distance and moderate difficulty level.

Loire boating tradition, fossils and water

The Batellerie du Port de Luynes builds traditional Loire boats and takes them out on the river. Every spring, it organizes the Fête de la Batellerie. The event includes introductions to traditional boating aboard a Fûtreau, as well as information about the Loire’s wildlife, vegetation and landscapes. The Musée Fossiles et Pierres en Val de Loire displays fossils, the oldest of which date from the Palaeozoic Era. The boating tradition and the fossils therefore offer different ways to explore your interests in the river and nature.

Les Thermes de Luynes is an aquatic complex with a 25 m outdoor sports pool for swimmers and a 12 x 15 m outdoor leisure pool with a bubbling bench and massage jet. There is also a splash pad, a dry paddling pool with water jets. The measurements refer to different dimensions: the sports pool’s length is given, while both the length and width are given for the leisure pool. Facility details and access conditions may change; check the current conditions before your visit.
